Captain Jack Takes a Cruz

All the recent talk about Penelope Cruz joining the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 got us thinking about the excellent locations throughout the Caribbean where the first 3 Pirates films were shot. If you’d like to re-create some of the more memorable moments in the adventures of Jack Sparrow, here’s where you should go…

Wallilabou Bay, St. Vincent
Port Royal, where the story begins for Jack, Will and Elizabeth, is situated on the northwest coast of St. Vincent. The set was basically built around a hotel in this black sand cove.

Samana, Dominican Republic
Quite a bit of the first movie was filmed here in the northeast DR before they moved to Dominica as the main shooting location for the next two films.

White Cay (also known as Sandy Cay), Exumas
Sword fighting on a beach of fine, pink sand surrounded by endangered iguanas basking in the sun.

Valley of Desolation, Dominica
This highly volcanic area peppered with brightly-colored hot springs, mini-geysers, boiling mud ponds and literally black streams was the setting for parts of Cannibal Island in the films. It’s also a great place for hiking.

Ti Tou Gorge, Dominica
Little Throat Gorge is a narrow waterway at the base of a waterfall that’s divided into “rooms” by high cliff walls. The water here is cold. So cold, in fact, that the crew were forced to don wet suits when filming Pirates 2.

Petit Tabac, Tobago Cays in the Grenadines
This is one of Uncommon Caribbean’s favorite locations in the films. It’s where Captain Jack was marooned with only a basement full of rum to keep him alive. Not a bad way to go, if you ask us.

Most of the locations used in the films have become trendy tourist attractions by virtue of hosting Jack’s adventures, so don’t expect to be the only one marooned on Petit Tabac. In fact, on Dominica it’s easy to find outfitters offering numerous ways to visit all the locations used on the island.

Could a Pirates 4 Penelope “Cruise” be in our future?
