Friday Happy Hour: ‘Life at the Kids Table’ Tanqueray Thanksgiving Treat
Thanksgiving is just about here and as I have yet to perfect my distilled TurDuckEn (one day, by god… one day) I decided to make another drink to play on those youthful memories of being ushered out of the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning, with a finger’s swipe of mashed potatoes, gleeful at my expanding appetite (and in turn, ahem, my belly).
Oh, the agony of sitting with your younger siblings at the small table. The one less fortified, one without heaping mounds of sweet potatoes, mashers, and the Holy Grail of my heart – my mother’s fresh sourdough bread.
One particular Thanksgiving I sat at the kids table suffering amongst the small portions, waiting for my chance at “seconds” to become secure. The adults began passing around a heavy brown bottle of Don Julio, thankfully dimming their attention long enough for me to swipe through the taters, turkey and cranberry sauce before they knew what hit ’em.
With that idea, I give you the sorta sweet, sorta savory, delicious as pie Life at the Kids Table.
Take your Cranberries, H20, and one cup of sugar and combine them in a saucepot. Bring to a boil then reduce to medium heat. Stir occasionally, watch as your cranberries start to pop as they heat up! Reduce your mix by a third then remove from heat and strain your cranberry mash and set aside. Place your fresh cranberry juice in the fridge to cool.
Now, puree your cranberry mash in a blender adding 1oz of gin (to help preserve it) for about a minute. I prefer to carbonate my cranberry juice (now soda) with my isi Soda Siphon, but it’s not necessary for this drink to be gulpable. Just add a touch of soda water.
Let’s Build It!
Combine 2oz Tanqueray Gin, two tablespoons Cranberry Puree, 2oz Cranberry Soda, 1/2oz Lime Juice, and two Dashes Angostura Bitters over ice in a tumbler and give it a hard shake for about 30 seconds. Pour without straining into a rocks glass. Now, we’re almost done! Here’s the best part, the frothy moustache making top!
Take your egg white and one teasponn of sugar and shake in your tumbler (no ice!) until it looks nice and frothy. Pour on top of your cocktail and garnish with a dollop of cranberry puree.
