Friday Happy Hour: Mount Gay Eclipse Silver

Mount Gay Eclipse Silver/SBPR

The 2011 Miami Rum Renaissance Festival has been in full swing the past few days here in South Florida, so you’d think I’d be awash in the type of good vibes and revelry that comes with sampling 118 different types of my favorite spirit hailing from all parts of the globe.

Sadly, you’d be wrong.

I’ve met with such the collection of roadblocks, miscommunications and dumb luck this week that I almost feel like there’s some strange, unseen evil force trying to keep me away from all the rum fun. I haven’t so much as sniffed a single one of the VIP parties hosted by rum royalty, the likes of Zafra, Brugal, and yes, even Bacardi. Monday’s Zombie Jamboree Cocktail Seminar with Jeff Berry? Never even got to really consider going as my son’s 102-degree fever that night had me dealing in a different type of “medicine”.

I don’t know what this evil menace might be, or why it feels the need to punish me this week, but as I wrote to a friend a couple days ago, all efforts to derail my enjoyment of rum will fail!

To that end, I’m kicking off my 2011 Rum Renaissance experience at tonight’s Mount Gay VIP Party at SOHO Beach House in Miami…NO. MATTER. WHAT!

I’m told the venerable Bajan brand will have four blends on hand, Mount Gay Extra Old, Mount Gay 1703, Mount Gay Eclipse, and the beauty pictured here, Mount Gay Eclipse Silver.

During my recent trip to Barbados with Patrick, I enjoyed my first tastes of Extra Old and 1703 amid the swanky surroundings at The House. We’ll have a lot more to say about those rums in future Friday Happy Hour posts, but suffice it to say, they both matched the elegant and stylish surroundings at The House perfectly.

Eclipse Silver, on the other hand, we encountered at the same normal, everyday rumshop where we met MMA fighter, Brolik. Nothing flashy, chic or luxurious; just a simple place with great people enjoying a few laughs and the laid back irie vibe that comes with being anywhere on the east coast of Barbados.

I did not get a taste of Eclipse Silver that afternoon, but I did learn the secret to its popularity with at least one of the local rumshop regulars. As you might guess if you already read this, it has everything to do with sex.

When you mix in some bitters and go home, you can do ’nuff damage!

Yeah, I’m looking forward to my first taste of Mount Gay Eclipse Silver tonight. I plan to walk with a bottle of Angostura Bitters too, so if you see me, you may want to steer clear…

Cheers!
