Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Montserrat’s Volcanic Running Inspiration

Bush rumblack sand beaches, brutal hills, and a towering inferno? It can only mean one thing! Registration is now open for the Montserrat Island Volcano Half-Marathon!

Now’s your chance to valiantly walk run in the footsteps of arguably our most adventurous trip ever! Last year’s race featured an overall altitude change of over 6,000 feet that roughly 40 adventurous runners (minus myself, unfortunately) tackled with an enthusiasm that could only have been fueled by the promise of alcoholic beverages at the finish line. Our own Dave Keener represented Uncommon Caribbean admirably in my stead. If you missed it, you should really check out his video recap of the whole run for a first-hand perspective.

Will Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent return to defend his crown? Will you surprise everyone and take home cold-hard cash prizes yourself? Last year’s female winners just attended for the challenge of this grueling volcanic course and found themselves subsidizing their travels with cash winnings instead.

If you’ve run a half-marathon, there’s a very good chance that you could win yourself some money in this one-of-a-kind event.

To remind yourself to register immediately and start training, download today’s Caribbean Wallpaper of the week. This deceptively peaceful backdrop features the very active (and very dangerous) Soufriere Hills Volcano from which the marathon gets its name. As though puffing out a steady stream of steam and smoke isn’t enough to inspire fear your sense of adventure, the obliterated island capital of Plymouth (mostly hidden under a thick layer of volcanic debris)  in the right side of the image should act as a reminder that participating in this half-marathon is something you’ll be talking about for years to come.

I’d recommend you stay with the angels of Olveston House for the best in island hospitality and definitely pay the rock n’ roll ruins of Air Studio a semi-legal visit.
