Help us Support The Grenada Goat Dairy Project

With all its fertile soil and ideal weather conditions, the Caribbean might seem more than adequately equipped to feed itself. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case over the years, though there is currently a resurgence in sustainable farming across the region aimed at reversing the sins of the past. Among my favorite drivers of this resurgence: The Grenada Goat Dairy Project.

I just got wind of the Project via Kickstarter, where they’re working toward raising US$55,000 to expand their operations, and in turn, help more Grenadians to feed themselves.

The benefits of the Goat Dairy Project and the essential need for it in Grenada are plainly evident in the video above. Already, dairy goats imported from the U.S. in 2010 through the Project have produced 100+ offspring that have been placed with goat farmers and families in need across the island. At the same time, the Goat Dairy Project’s farm facility supplies the island’s local chefs, restaurants, hotels and grocery stores with an assortment of fresh dairy products, including cheese, pudding, yogurt, ice cream and milk in plain chocolate and locally spiced varieties.

Everybody wins with the Grenada Goat Dairy Project, but with demand for dairy goats and dairy products outpacing supply, the time is now to help the operation grow.

From the idyllic surrounds of posh resorts like Mt. Cinnamon or La Source, it might be hard for regular visitors to the island to conceive of the levels of unemployment and poverty there. You’re not a regular traveler, though, so I hope you’ll join with us in helping to support this extremely worthy cause.

With about a week to go, The Goat Dairy Project is about US$14,000 away from their goal. If they don’t raise the full US$55,000, everyone who made pledges will get their money back. There are a variety of gifts for different donation levels and 100% of your pledge will go toward expanding the Project with the construction of a new educational dairy facility specifically aimed at youth development at St. Patrick’s Anglican Public School.

Thank you so much for sharing out story! We have made it beyond our goal and we still have a few more hours to go!

What a great idea. Perhaps it should be extended to include the poor farmers in the Appellation areas of the USA. They have difficult winters to contend with so their needs would be slightly different, but to raise goats for goat cheese would help these desperately poor Americans.
