Friday Happy Hour: Jesse Card’s VIP Cruzan Painkiller Recipe

Friday Happy Hour: Jesse Card’s VIP Cruzan Painkiller Recipe

Editor’s Note: It being Sailing Week here at Uncommon Caribbean, we are, of course, thinking rum for today’s Friday Happy Hour. After all, nothing goes better with hitting the high seas than the quintessential Caribbean spirit, especially when it’s mixed in that most cherished of seafaring cocktails, the Painkiller. True to our uncommon nature, we’re not sharing just any old Painkiller recipe, of course. Our in-house mixologist, Jesse Card, reserves this secret sauce for his most special VIP customers – people like you! Here’s the scoop in Jesse’s words…

Ahhh, the glorious Painkiller. When I have a guest at the bar that deserves something special, I break out a classic St. Croix style Painkiller – strong and rich in flavors of the Piña Colada with a touch of uniquely Crucian flare! Here’s how you make it…

Ingredients:
  • 2oz Coco Lopez
  • 2oz Pineapple Juice
  • .5oz Orange Juice
  • 1.5oz Cruzan Dark
  • .75oz Cruzan 151
  • Cruzan Black Strap
  • 1 teaspoon Grated Nutmeg

I start with two heaping ounces of Coco Lopez in a pint glass, followed by two ounces of fresh pineapple juice and a half ounce of OJ. Next, I add 1.5 ounces of Cruzan Dark rum and .75 ounces of Cruzan 151. (What, we like it strong on di island!)

Add ice to the glass and give it a hearty shake. Now, here’s the secret that makes my Cruzan style Painkiller so special – float a hefty amount of Cruzan Black Strap on top. Next, grate a good teaspoon+ worth of nutmeg on too of that.

You end up with an outrageously delicious oil slick of molasses and spice that filters into your drink as you sip. The lower your drink gets the bolder it becomes.

Jesse hit me with this recipe earlier today, and I can honestly say it’s the main reason why this post is being published a little late tonight!

The flavor is bold, as promised, with the 151 providing a hearty kick that makes you take things slow. While you’re taking your time, the Black Strap float progressively works its way down the glass, meeting the end of your straw at the bottom in a climax of salacious rum sweetness worthy of a spanking!

Here’s hoping our friends at Intrepid Travel will be serving Painkillers like these on their new Caribbean Sailing Adventures. Only eight guests are welcomed aboard their ships per-sailing, so everyone is already treated like a VIP anyway. Might as well serve ‘em Painkiller worthy of the Intrepid experience, right?

Cheers!

Sounds great! Never made one that deviated away from the 4-1-1 ratio. You guys might get a call from Pusser’s lawyers over this post.. Lost my taste for their rum after they tried to sue that bar in NYC called Painkiller.. Come on man!
