On-Site Montserrat: Air Studios, Rock and Roll Ruins

From the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, the view of the Soufriere Hills is spectacular. To say this volcano is smoking is an understatement. Chain-smoking is more like it. As a result, a vast area surrounding the volcano bears the scifi-worthy name, “The Exclusion Zone.” Looking over the landscape, I noticed two little white houses with roofs of brick red. It seemed like a strange spot, directly between the peaceful blue water and the smoking crater with the pipeline to Hell.
Those little white buildings are all that remain of Air Studios Montserrat. Beatles producer George Martin fell in love with Montserrat and founded Air Studios in 1979.

On-Site Montserrat: Olympic Marathoner to Challenge Keener in Volcano Half-Marathon

Looks like team Uncommon Caribbean is going to get a run for its money in the 2nd Annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon.  Today, Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent, veteran of the Sydney and Atlanta Olympics, landed in Montserrat. He was immediately whisked off to the radio station ZJB, where he announced his intention to win the race and beat the current record of one hour, thirty-six minutes. Later, he sat with our own Patrick Bennett on the veranda of Olveston House for a video interview, in which he not only repeated his bold prediction, but supported it with a mind-boggling list of marathon victories and record times throughout the West Indies.

I’m Running Around an Active Volcano… What are You Doing for Thanksgiving?

Editor’s note: A couple weeks ago, Patrick shared a post on how his training is coming along, err, not coming along for the upcoming Montserrat Half Marathon. Today, we have an update from Patrick’s running mate, Dave Keener….
It’s true. This Thanksgiving, there will be an empty chair at my Uncle Tom’s house in Morris County, New Jersey. My friend Patrick and I will be on our way to the island of Montserrat to take part in the 2nd annual Volcano Half-Marathon.
I love telling people here in New York that I’m running a half-marathon in Montserrat. First, there is the look of admiration, realizing they stand before a real man of adventure in an age with so few heroes.
