Try to imagine yourself in my shoes: There I was, in the middle of nowhere, deep in a Caribbean wilderness, pitch-black night was closing in all around me. I had no headlamp, no food, the batteries in my flashlight were dead, I’d left all my belongings in the care of a random old stranger hours ago with only a vague promise that I’d ever see them again, strange animal sounds alluded to massive wild boars lurking nearby, the temperature was dropping rapidly and, to top it all off, the only man for miles around had just pulled a long, rusty machete from an all-too-convenient, hidey-hole in a tree… and was now smiling at me as he squatted over a stone sharpening his rusty blade.

The other day I ran across this old article on the New York Times entitled 6 Caribbean Beaches to See Before You Die by Jeremy W. Peters. In this “brief guide,” Jeremy opens with a statement near and dear to our hearts here at Uncommon Caribbean: “the Caribbean Sea — with islands that are flat, mountainous, tiny and vast — is specked with beaches that defy tropical conventions.”

While Steve has been a lot recently, it’s been a few years since I’ve visited Trinidad. On that trip, I only spent one night in Port-of-Spain before setting off in search of our long lost grandmother Steve had recently reconnected with. She was living down south in Point Fortin, so the drive was a great opportunity to get away from the crush of the big city and experience another side of The Land of the Humming Bird… One the video above has me desperate to see more of!
