Friday Happy Hour: Zombie!, a Cocktail Fit for New Moms & Dads

zombie2

As a recently blessed first-time-father, I often find myself at work paused in mid-step trying to remember just what in fact I was trying to accomplish. My shuffling feet seem to know what I need to do, but with a dangerous potion of distracted focus and sleep deprivation, I find myself befuddled with even the simplest of tasks.
I have become a Zombie.
And I don’t mind it at all.
Zombies are delicious. Well, at least the drink is.
The Zombie harks back to the exciting days of early post-prohibition, when Americans were eager to wet their whistles with the intoxicating ingredients that had been discovered outside our continental borders, our vicarious exploits extensively imbibed and written about by Bon Vivant’s such as Ernest Hemmingway, Charles H.

Friday Happy Hour: ‘Life at the Kids Table’ Tanqueray Thanksgiving Treat

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Thanksgiving is just about here and as I have yet to perfect my distilled TurDuckEn (one day, by god… one day) I decided to make another drink to play on those youthful memories of being ushered out of the kitchen on Thanksgiving morning, with a finger’s swipe of mashed potatoes, gleeful at my expanding appetite (and in turn, ahem, my belly).
Oh, the agony of sitting with your younger siblings at the small table. The one less fortified, one without heaping mounds of sweet potatoes, mashers, and the Holy Grail of my heart – my mother’s fresh sourdough bread.
One particular Thanksgiving I sat at the kids table suffering amongst the small portions, waiting for my chance at “seconds” to become secure.

Friday Happy Hour: Cruzan 9 Spiced Daiquiri

Cruzan 9 Spiced Daiquiri

This week we take a trip back to Cuba, circa 1898, to re-discover the origins of the Daiquiri. Once a staple of Caribbean watering holes, this simply delicious rum drink is now long forgotten on these shores, having been besmirched by blenders and purveyors of mass marketed sour drink mix.
After the Spanish-American War (1898), an American engineer by the name of Jennings Stockton Cox of the Juraga Iron Company was sent to the town of Daiquiri, Cuba to begin developing the iron-ore mines.
The U.S. had secured temporary control of Cuba from the Spanish with the Treaty of Paris (America also gained colonial authority of Puerto Rico and Guam in this declaration) and American industrial interests were in a hurry to make claims on the mineral deposits of the island before Cuba realized full independence.

Friday Happy Hour: Single Barrel Shipwreck

Single Barrel Shipwreck

Not too long ago, our friend RumShopRyan stopped by Uncommon Caribbean for a chat about two of our favorite things: women and rum. Blessed, as I am, with expertise in both, I wanted to take this opportunity to follow up with my own two cents.
Successfully courting the ladies on vacation in the Caribbean can be a difficult minefield to maneuver. Stiff competition from boys who share “similar goals”, small windows of opportunity and unfortunate sunburns are just a few of the obstacles you face. But the worst mistake I see repeated all the time is guys falling victim to the glorious bounty of free flowing booze.

Friday Happy Hour: Grog, a British Naval Tradition Since 1655

grog

One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak…
This little rhyme was once the most coveted drink recipe in the British Royal Navy. A little rum-soaked sonnet adapted from Barbadian origins and flown across the high seas of the Caribbean. Evoked for both medicinal and celebratory reasons, these 12 words were not just a suggestion, but a standard that kept British sailors buoyant and the ship’s purser honest. Known in some circles as spelldeck or punch, you’ve likely heard of this royal ration by its more common name - Grog.
The British Royal Navy began doling out rum rations in 1655, shortly after their momentous victory over the Spanish in Jamaica.

Friday Happy Hour: Solomons Key

Solomons Key

St. Croix has always beckoned to those seeking paradise. Escapist romantics, fortune hunters, families, artists, pirates, drifters – all have found solace on her warm and welcoming shores. As a result, a broad swath of cultures have integrated on our little piece of protruding rock – our own Crucian Melting Pot.
One group in particular has stood out to me, specifically in the face of disaster, as a true friend of the Virgin Islands. I’m talking about our friends and neighbors from the Middle East – Lebanese and Pakistani families who have made a great life for themselves among St. Croix’s countless other cultures, while also greatly benefiting the island community at-large.

Friday Happy Hour: Smooth Criminal

It was a sad day on the Rock last year as we watched the stirring hoopla surrounding the death of Michael Jackson. Well, I reckon as a fan of such majestic Zombie repertoire as Thriller, the least I could do was make a drink in respect.

1/2 oz Cointreau
1 egg white
1/4 teaspoon sugar
2 oz soda water

Ingredients for infusion:

1 bottle Cruzan Light rum
