Jesse Card writes for the St. Croix Libation Society about Bartending and general Skullduggery creation tactics from the beautiful, yet product deficient, island of St. Croix. You can find him most nights behind the stick at Salud! Bistro, or later at night posted up in the corner of a local Santo bar, clutching a glass of Single Barrel and softly singing punk rock anthems until the well runs dry…

Friday Happy Hour: Vexed Valencia

Vexed Valencia WWW.KELLYGREERPHOTOGRAPHER.COM

Today’s inventive libation came to be as most of our favorites have – after midnight at the bar and completely by chance.
It was a fun Saturday night. The staff and a few good customers were hanging out after we locked up for the night. I had made a batch of Orangecello earlier that day and had a half dozen zested oranges left over. I needed to use ‘em up before they turned to the dark side (went bad), but how?
For inspiration I turned to my favorite dishwasher, Valencia. A funny, sweetheart of a lady, Valencia is the hardest working Grandmother I know.

Friday Happy Hour: Cruzan Single Barrel Sour

Single Barrel Sour

Uncommon Caribbean already introduced you to Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum, so I’ll forgo another round of reviewing its accolades, but I will add my two cents. Normally, I would be reticent to add more than a couple ice cubes to this fantastic rum, but after tasting several high end rums side by side against Single Barrel, I found that this 12 year blended rum from Cruzan still maintains most of its delicate notes, while the other brands fell flat after dilution. So with spring having sprung and Bitter Curacao Oranges falling off the trees in my backyard, I bring you the Single Barrel Sour.

Friday Happy Hour: Lemon-Rosemary Spritzer

Lemon-Rosemary-Spritzer

We live in a land of bounty. A land in which the next big thing to may make your mouth water could very well already be growing in your backyard, or that of your neighbor. All you have to do is find it.
Our latest project, a testament to spring, is a fairly easy and delicious way to get started. I give you the Lemon-Rosemary Spritzer.

Ingredients

4 lemons
6 stems fresh rosemary
1 bottle (750ml) Smirnoff Vodka
sugar
soda water

This is a two-day project, so if you’re having company over on Saturday, start this on Thursday. We’re making a lemon-rosemary infused vodka.

Friday Happy Hour: White Empress

Living on an island takes some getting used to. The islands move at their own plodding gait, with no real destination in mind. It’s a slow, easy trail full of smiles and breaks in the shade. There’s a calm simplicity to the way people do things down here. Simple living, island style.
This simplicity extends to the best of Caribbean cocktails. Easy favorites, like the Barbados Swizzle or Hemmingway Daiquiri, have helped to caution a new generation of bartender on the dangers of over thinking.
Out on the fringes of our noble profession, though, there lurks a dark sub-culture of cocktailia fraught with overindulgence; a sect that just can’t say “NO” to an extra gimmicky ingredient or two.

Uncommon Caribbean is pleased to welcome our 1st contributor, Jesse Card, who also happens to be our favorite St. Croix mixologist. Get to know him here; read on to see what he has to say…
“I want a tropical drink, but please don’t say Painkiller…”
This, a 40 something good natured woman sitting at my bar asked last week. It was her last night on St. Croix, and while she had a great time exploring the island’s dynamic undersea wonders, she yearned to break free of the same tired drink options offered above water.
“Painkiller, Bushwacker, Painkiller, Bushwacker! It’s like they’re the only two drinks around here!”
Let’s try something different that showcases our local Caribbean flavors, without sacrificing integrity or using a blender.
