Postcards from the Sexy Sailors: Taking 5 at Sugar Ridge, Antigua

sugar1

It’s been a while since we’re heard from our friends Alex and Taru, the loving, young European couple we affectionately refer to as the Sexy Sailors. As you may recall, these seafaring adventurers left the real world behind in favor of circumnavigating the globe back in October 2010. So far, they’ve spent the majority of their time traipsing around the Caribbean, dropping anchor along such sultry shores as Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barts and St. Maarten/St. Martin.
It all sounds super glamorous, right? If you’ve had a look at the amazing photography Taru posts to their blog you’d say it all looks super glamorous too!

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Money Can’t Buy You Beach

Public Beach at Curtain Bluff, Antigua by Patrick Bennett

It’s said that the best things in life are free. A kiss from your crush. A smile from your son. The kaleidoscopic wonder of another sunset. None of these moments cost a penny yet all of them carry a value — one no exchange rate can place a number on.
Now if you don’t already know this you may find it hard to believe, but on many islands there’s something else money simply can’t buy: beaches.

Friday Happy Hour: Bambu White Rum, Perfect if You Prefer Vodka

bambu

My wife doesn’t like rum.
Sad, shocking, but true.
It wouldn’t be fair to say she hates the stuff like poison. No, better to say that she just plain doesn’t like the stuff, period. (No need to draw poor, old, innocent poison into this.)
Her preferred spirit of choice: vodka.
Nothing wrong with that, though as a native West Indian proud of my home region’s rum heritage, I’ve always wanted to find a blend that would suit her taste. I tried everything from spiced rums and flavored blends, to top-shelf favorites and reliable, old stand-by’s, but nothing worked for her.
Then, earlier this year, I stumbled upon the skinny, striped bottle pictured above.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: English Harbour, Antigua

English Harbour, Antigua

What’s the value of a week? A day? A moment?
Ever find yourself asking these questions when you’re knee deep in some boring or unpleasant or just somehow “not you” task? I do. All the time.
I could be sitting in a meeting about some irksome work issue that for one seemingly never-ending moment occupies an immense portion of a room full of people’s minds. Sometimes it’s when I’m riding the subway to work — toiling away unsuccessfully at Angry Birds while a nearby fellow straphanger infiltrates the furthest reaches of his nostrils looking for who-knows-what. Ever think about how much time we spend doing things we “have to”?

Deal of the Week: Antigua & Barbuda Literary Festival

Caitlinator via flickr

This may come as a surprise to those of you who, like me, consume the vast majority of their news, information and entertainment on sites like this, but here goes: People still read books!
I don’t mean the bright and shiny “pages” emanating from the likes of Kindles or iPads either. I mean honest to goodness paperbacks (and the occasional hardcover), ripped pages, dog ears, musty smells and all.
I know it’s true because my wife, Kelly, is one of “them.” She loves books. I’m pretty sure she read two or three just last week! When we’re on vacation, of course, she reads even more.

Taste of the Caribbean: Sweet & Sexy Papaya Pie

love♡janine via Flickr

Just try to say papaya without cracking a smile… Not only does it remind me of warm childhood days back in St. Croix traipsing through the bush on imaginary adventures with my brothers, but this fruit is also just damn sexy!
It’s sweet, yes. It’s juicy too, but so are a lot of other fruits. The sexy difference lies in the papaya’s distinctly feminine physical traits.
On the outside, papayas have a sensuously round, bosom-like shape, the full effect of which is best represented pre-harvest when they’re still, um…hanging in the trees.
On the inside, well, take a look at the photo above… Do I really have to spell it out?
