Guess Where Giveaway: Win a Free Tortuga Rum Cake!

Guess Where Give Away

Uncommon Caribbean rarely needs an excuse to party. But, it just so happens that we welcomed our 500th Facebook fan last week, so let’s celebrate!
Like any good celebration, this one will have rum, a cake and a game.
Okay, the rum and cake are together in the form of a Tortuga Rum Cake. The #1 export of the Cayman Islands, Tortuga Rum Cakes are made in the grand tradition of an age-old Hamaty family recipe handed down through the generations. The husband and wife duo of Robert and Carlene Hamaty founded the Tortuga Rum Company back in 1984, with Carlene starting the cake end of the business in 1987.

Skittish on Europe? Try These 4 Euro-style Caribbean Destinations

Patrick Bennett

So, you had your heart set on a fabulous European vacation and now you’re thinking, ummm, not so much.
Next best option: the Caribbean.
Colonial ties to France, the UK, Spain, etc. run deep in the region, creating unique opportunities to indulge in the best of Europe under idyllic tropical conditions (i.e.: sans ash).
Where should you go to find Europe in the Caribbean? Here are 4 suggestions…
Martinique
No other Caribbean destination reflects its European ties better than Martinique. This is most evident in the area that matters most to many Europe fans: food.
Traditional French cuisine on-par with that found at the best eateries in Paris is widely available throughout the island.

Friday Happy Hour: Lemon-Rosemary Spritzer

Lemon-Rosemary-Spritzer

We live in a land of bounty. A land in which the next big thing to may make your mouth water could very well already be growing in your backyard, or that of your neighbor. All you have to do is find it.
Our latest project, a testament to spring, is a fairly easy and delicious way to get started. I give you the Lemon-Rosemary Spritzer.

Ingredients

4 lemons
6 stems fresh rosemary
1 bottle (750ml) Smirnoff Vodka
sugar
soda water

This is a two-day project, so if you’re having company over on Saturday, start this on Thursday. We’re making a lemon-rosemary infused vodka.

Friday Happy Hour: White Empress

Living on an island takes some getting used to. The islands move at their own plodding gait, with no real destination in mind. It’s a slow, easy trail full of smiles and breaks in the shade. There’s a calm simplicity to the way people do things down here. Simple living, island style.
This simplicity extends to the best of Caribbean cocktails. Easy favorites, like the Barbados Swizzle or Hemmingway Daiquiri, have helped to caution a new generation of bartender on the dangers of over thinking.
Out on the fringes of our noble profession, though, there lurks a dark sub-culture of cocktailia fraught with overindulgence; a sect that just can’t say “NO” to an extra gimmicky ingredient or two.

Uncommon Caribbean is pleased to welcome our 1st contributor, Jesse Card, who also happens to be our favorite St. Croix mixologist. Get to know him here; read on to see what he has to say…
“I want a tropical drink, but please don’t say Painkiller…”
This, a 40 something good natured woman sitting at my bar asked last week. It was her last night on St. Croix, and while she had a great time exploring the island’s dynamic undersea wonders, she yearned to break free of the same tired drink options offered above water.
“Painkiller, Bushwacker, Painkiller, Bushwacker! It’s like they’re the only two drinks around here!”
Let’s try something different that showcases our local Caribbean flavors, without sacrificing integrity or using a blender.

Uncommon Photo-Op: Underwater Photography

Uncommon-Photo-Op--Underwater-Photography-thumbnail

It only takes losing your favorite camera to the salty depths once to realize that when traveling in the Caribbean, it’s a good idea to carry a “tough” camera. After much trial and more than a few errors, Uncommon Caribbean recommends the Canon Powershot D10 as our top choice.
This 12.1 megapixel marvel lives up to its odd submarine shape with a depth rating of up to 10 meters. That’s almost 3 times deeper than most comparable tough cameras. Add to that the D10′s ability to handle temperatures down to 14º F (not much of a concern in the islands, we know) plus drops of around 1.22 meters and you’ve got the perfect point and shoot companion for any vacation adventure.
