Grenadines
Our Posts about Grenadines
There are over 7,000 islands and islets in the Caribbean.
This figure is one I often find myself dwelling on ever since Steve and I began Uncommon Caribbean. Over 7,000 islands and islets! How in the world are we going to cover them all! And why in the world do so many people not realize that there’s so much more to the Caribbean than MoBay in Jamaica, St. Thomas and Nassau?
Now, I’m not saying those are bad destinations to visit. As Steve has proven so well on his recent trips to Aruba and Grand Cayman, exceptional experiential travel adventures can be found even on some of the most well-trodden islands.
It was somewhere between St. Vincent and Bequia, as our boat skimmed along powered only by the trade winds swelling her sails, that I remember whispering inaudibly to myself: “I love sailing.”
Our sailing adventure kicked off in earnest just the day before when the wife and I awoke bright and early to the sounds of our 6-month old burbling in the crib provided by Oasis Marigot. The property sits on a steep hillside above Marigot Bay, St. Lucia. This precipitous positioning provides for stunningly picturesque views of the small bay, mountains and sea!
To make negotiating the abrupt incline up to your room easier, they employ an old motorized pulley attached to a tiny trolley on rails.
While on my recent sailing adventure through the Grenadines, I visited heaven on Earth.
Specifically, I’m speaking of the Tobago Cays. Few places on the entire planet can rival this Caribbean destination for shear awe-inspiring, natural beauty. It’s almost as though a divine architect took a poll of our deepest tropical desires only to render them in a masterpiece of turquoise, ultra-marine, pink and emerald.
Everything you could ever want in a deserted island paradise is here.
You’ll find shallow, crystalline waters teaming with colorful sea life including graceful sea turtles gliding to and fro. The borderline where sea reluctantly gives way to land couldn’t be graced with more picture-perfect white sand.
Before you read a word of this post, stop and visualize your dream vacation.
I’ll wait…
Got it?
Ok, now crumple up that image and throw it in the trash.
We’re Uncommon Caribbean and our focus isn’t “vacations”— it’s experiential travel. You work hard for your money, right? So why waste it on a vanilla experience at a McAll-Inclusive when you could be spending that hard-earned cash on a one-of-a-kind travel adventure you (and all your jealous friends) will be talking about for years?
That’s certainly the thinking behind a lot of what we do here at UC. Just look at Dave’s trip to the decidedly off-the-beaten-path island of Montserrat.
Most people prefer the aisle, some might even like the middle (though I can’t imagine why), but for me, nothing beats the window seat when traveling by air, especially to the Caribbean. The minute I catch a glimpse of a view like this, I get all giddy, like a kid at Christmas anxious to get at the treasures hidden below.
What could make this gorgeous site even better? How about getting to enjoy it for free!
This is Canouan, an absolutely idyllic slice of paradise included in St. Vincent‘s portion of the Grenadines (Grenada has its share as well). One of the truly special little properties here, Tamarind Beach Hotel, is rewarding guests arriving in Canouan via SVG Air from either St.
