Saturday Video: Remembering the Reggae Boyz’ Historic World Cup Run

ReggaeBoyz

With World Cup fever now in full swing across the Caribbean (and virtually everywhere else) we’re taking a look back and saluting Jamaica’s football heroes, The Reggae Boyz. Who could forget back in 1998 when Jamaica became the first English speaking country from the Caribbean to ever qualify for the World Cup Finals, a feat many in the region thought would never happen. Making the tournament was historic, but when they won their 3rd game 2-1 vs Japan the Reggae Boyz became legends. Remember when by enjoying the video above, which showcases some of Jamaica’s biggest recording artists – Ziggy Marley, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, among them – performing the Reggae Boyz theme song from 1998, Rise Up!

Uncommon Beauty: New Dates for Caribbean Fashion Week, Kingston

fashion

The show must go on, especially when it’s 1 of the Caribbean’s sexiest!
New dates were announced earlier this week for Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) in Kingston. The move, necessitated by the recent unrest in Western Kingston, will see the event take place June 15-21.
Why might you want to attend? Well, besides getting a chance to check out some serious eye candy like Mr. Abs here, you can also benefit a great cause.
For 2010, some CFW proceeds will go toward supporting the Haiti Art & Fashion Project. A new initiative spearheaded by Jamaica’s Pulse Foundation (organizers of CFW) working in conjunction with The Caribbean Fashion Industry Association (Cafia) and participating art, music and fashion industry entities in the region, the Haiti Art & Fashion Project supports the rehabilitation and development of Haiti’s creative arts, fashion and business industries in the wake of January’s tragic earthquake.

Friday Happy Hour: Raise a Glass to Jamaica

Bob Marley shot/SBPR

Anyone with any ties to Jamaica can surely use a drink right about now. Certainly things are not “irie” in Western Kingston where Jamaica’s military and police have been engaged in a highly-publicized struggle this week against thugs bent on preventing the extradition of alleged crime boss Christopher “Dudus” Coke to the U.S. As many of our Jamaican friends have noted, though, this type of corrective action has been a long time coming, and will no doubt result in a better Jamaica.
In the meantime, it’s business as usual in Jamaica’s resort areas – Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, and Port Antonio.

Taste of the Caribbean: Savor the Real Jamaica at Scotchie’s, MoBay

by Steve Bennett

Even in the most touristy of regional destinations, a taste of the true Caribbean is never too far away. Case in point: Scotchie’s, Montego Bay.
For my money, this roadside eatery, located within easy walking distance of the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort, serves up the best jerk chicken outside of Boston Beach, the magical part of Jamaica where jerk cuisine originated. This makes sense because the original chef at Scotchie’s is actually from Boston Beach. He brought the secrets of jerk seasoning with him, passing them down to Scotchie’s current chefs to the delight of the residents of MoBay, and the few tourists smart enough to mix in some genuine local flavor with their all-inclusive resort vacations.

Uncommon Beauty: The Beaches of Portland, Jamaica

jump

Uncommon Caribbean loves the beach… especially when the scenery rivals the image at left.
This shot was captured in Portland, Jamaica’s 7th largest Parish, and home to some of JA’s most valued treasures.
Over Portland’s 314 square miles you’ll find the highest peaks of the mystical Blue Mountains, the legendary Blue Lagoon, Rio Grande, and a series of seaside caves, bays, waterfalls and hills that make this an eco-lover’s dream come true.
The place is just downright gorgeous. So much so that swashbuckling Hollywood star, Errol Flynn, who lived in Portland after his yacht shipwrecked there in the mid-1940′s, called the area “the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.”
We hear that his wife, presumably #2 on Flynn’s list, still lives there today.
