Deal of the Week: Spring Savings at Hotel Bakoua, Martinique

Hotel-Bakoua

When it comes to hotels with colonial West Indian charm, it’s hard to beat Hotel Bakoua in Martinique. After all, the property’s main structure was originally built as a colonial estate. Now part of Sofitel’s MGallery collection, the 139-room Bakoua retains an authentic, East India Company style, with vast open spaces, rattan and precious wood furnishings, and a lush tropical garden that leads to a seascape of endless skies above the Bay of Fort-de-France.
One of our favorite things about Bakoua is its lobby bar, which ranks high on our list of the most picturesque places to enjoy a cocktail in the Caribbean. The bar area fronts a small, yet alluring infinity pool, which seemingly drops right into the Bay.

Taking Ecotourism to New Heights

Courtesy SBPR Corp.

While some eco-friendly hotels merely appeal to tree-huggers, Martinique’s Le Domaine de Robinson actually gives them the whole tree (at least for the duration of their stay). This seven-room nature-lover’s paradise is nestled in the verdant wilds along Martinique’s southwest shore. The beach sand is black; the water, unbelievably vibrant shades of blue and green. Colorful and fragrant wild flowers are everywhere. Civilization, in the form of the lively resort town of Trois Ilets, is just a few miles away, but it feels much further by virtue of the property’s secluded location well off the main road. The snorkeling here is great, and well-marked hiking trails are nearby.

Le M – Best McDonald’s Burger Ever

Le M Burger Avec Bacon

On our last trip to Martinique, we kept seeing ads for the Le M burger at McDonald’s all over the place. Uncommon Caribbean loves to sample local McDonald’s around the region to see how different cultures and local tastes shape international products. Naturally we had to try Le M.
Our verdict: wow! This is definitely not your average Mickey D’s! Just check out the photos.
This is real food. It tastes like a real burger! It has real bread!!! And it even uses real cheese!!!!
That even the McDonald’s in Martinique should offer eats of such high caliber should really come as no surprise.

Taste of the Caribbean: Plein Soleil

plein

Look at your meal, now back to this photo, now back at your meal, now back to this. Sadly this isn’t your meal, but it would be if you were at Plein Soleil, a tres-chic boutique hotel nestled in the hills above the seaside town of Le Francois in Martinique.
A sublime expression of exquisite style, exclusive amenities and exceptional service Plein Soleil has only 16 guestrooms and suites spread among five colourful villas. Each villa is designed in the style of traditional Martinican creole cases, or petite houses adorned with wooden fretwork. Though sharing the same architectural style, each villa is unique in its own special way, with some seemingly carved from the hillside, further accentuating the property’s transcendent union with nature.

Friday Happy Hour: Biere Lorraine

DSC_4364 - Version 2

Rum may rule the roost when it comes to Caribbean libations, but the region also boasts a rich array of beers, each as distinctive as the islands they call home. On this particular Friday, we’re jonesing for a light, refreshing Biere Lorraine.
Ever since 1919, when an enterprising French engineer named Rene de Jaham decided in the wake of WWI that it would be a good idea to brew beer in the French West Indies, Martinique has been blessed with one of the region’s finest lagers. Jaham named his beer in tribute to the French Region of Lorraine, home to France’s richest beer-making tradition (Lorraine’s oldest brews date back to 5,000 B.C.) and the place where he learned the beermaster’s craft.
