Timelapsing Around El Morro in Old San Juan

With magical memories of The Epic Side of Trinidad timelapse video still fresh in our minds, we simply couldn’t resist sharing this similarly amazing timelapse perspective on El Morro, the sprawling 16th century fort that’s as much a symbol of Old San Juan and Puerto Rico as anything else.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: 6 Caribbean Beaches to See Before You Die?

Sunset on Flamenco Beach Culebra by Patrick Bennett

The other day I ran across this old article on the New York Times entitled 6 Caribbean Beaches to See Before You Die by Jeremy W. Peters. In this “brief guide,” Jeremy opens with a statement near and dear to our hearts here at Uncommon Caribbean: “the Caribbean Sea — with islands that are flat, mountainous, tiny and vast — is specked with beaches that defy tropical conventions.”

Friday Happy Hour: The Hope for an Independent Puerto Rico and Free Ron del Barrilito

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Strolling the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, it’s impossible to ignore the past. To simply look around, to feel the vibe of the ancient city  – her warmth, her smells, the rhythm in her chaos – is to be transported back to the romanticized Puerto Rico of yore.
This was a time when pirates and foreign invaders preyed regularly at her shores, miracles were common and rum first displaced brandy and cognac as the local drink of choice.
Then, as now, the rum most-desired in Puerto Rico: Ron del Barrilito.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: My Mystery Shipwreck in the Bahia de Fajardo

Sunken Off Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Guess what?
We don’t know everything there is to know about the Caribbean!
I can easily see why it might seem like we do. Every day we share posts on subjects near and dear to our hearts that may be new to you. Ever sipped Stallion Milk Stout? Have you ever even heard of, much less been to, the village of Toco on Trinidad? (Well, don’t worry, we’ve never been there either!)
Sure, as native West Indians, we have a unique, insider perspective to the cultural and natural wonders of the Caribbean, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: we’re picking some of this up as we go!

People ask me all the time how it is that I speak Spanish so well.
Is there some Spanish lineage in my family history? Am I secretly from the DomRep? Rossetta Stone?
Dedicated instruction at the hands of Mrs. Rivera, my elementary school Spanish teacher whom I’ve mentioned a time or two, certainly had a lot to do with it. But, one of the silliest TV shows of all time played a big role as well…

It’s Worth Weathering the Rain for El Yunque National Rainforest

El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico sign

Beaches. Beaches. Beaches. The Caribbean is more than just beaches. So, on our recent trip to Fajardo, Puerto Rico with another couple and their infant, we decided to tear ourselves away from serene Seven Seas Beach long enough to head into the lush island interior.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: The Mesmerizing Mystical Mystery Horse, Puerto Rico

Mystical Horse, Puerto Rico

It’s November. While that may mean freezing our asses off up here in New York City, it means one thing to those living or visiting the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean:
Hurricane season is coming to a close!
Of course, anything could still happen over the course of the next 29 days, but it’s pretty unlikely that anything serious will develop in the Caribbean until next year.
