Unraveling Most of the Mystery Surrounding Rhum St. Barth

Courtesy Rhum St. Barth

A couple weeks ago, we had a little fun with the mystery that surrounds Rhum St. Barth (aka: R. St Barth), the pricey artisanal rhum from the tiny Tony island where sugar cane has never once stretched from the soil. We had questions about the origin of the rhum, how it gets to St. Barts, and what, if any, part of the production process actually occurs in its namesake island.
Well, I’m happy to say we have a few answers to share today, courtesy of Alison Bartrop, an R. St Barth communications and business development rep who just happened to see our story and wanted to set the record straight.

Uncommon Envy: Exploring the Mystery of Rhum St Barth

Credit: Rhum St. Barth

St. Barts would seem a rather odd destination for a rum journey, especially since the island’s exceedingly arid climate and rocky terrain have always made sugar production impossible here. You won’t hear the sound of sugarcane rustling in the breeze in St. Barts as you do along Martinique’s Route de Rhum. Nor is the landscape dotted with ancient sugar mills and centuries-old plantations like the kind you’d find at River Antoine in Grenada.
Nevertheless, rum’s siren song is luring me to St. Barts these days, my curiosity piqued by the beauty in the box.

Feed the Uncommon Caribbean Photo Pool on Flickr.com

I’ve long felt that St. Barts absolutely has to be among the sweetest destinations in the Caribbean, and this photo basically proves it!
It’s not the multiple shades of alluring blue waters that’s tickling my fancy, nor an imagined perspective of the jaw-dropping views one can surely enjoy from the swanky homes and villas perched atop the island’s signature seaside ridges and hills.
Nope, the thing that grabs me about this image is the sheer wall of rock rising steeply from the sea, its multiple layers of sediment creating the illusion of a fancy tiered cake sliced right down the middle.

Uncommon Envy: New Spa at Christopher Hotel, St. Barts

Back on Saturday, I mentioned that we’d soon share details on affordable hotel options in super-swanky St. Barts. With rates starting at 300 euros (about US$400) per night, the stylish Christopher Hotel may not qualify as reasonably-priced for some, but it’s certainly a place just about anyone would aspire to check out.
Barely two years old (the first guests were welcomed in December 2009), the Christopher boasts an absolutely idyllic tropical location, with a lush, flowering landscape fronting a rocky shoreline in Pointe Milou along St. Barts’ north coast. It’s a quiet, secluded area a good 10-15 minutes outside of the main town, Gustavia.

Saturday Video: Surfing in St. Barts

St. Barts is known for offering visitors a wealth of travel treasures the likes of which the majority of us will never know.
Of all the shiny shores throughout the Caribbean, it’s arguable that the ones you’ll find here are the most exclusive. Celebrity sightings are about as common as palm trees everywhere else in the region. Shopping caters strongly toward those carrying platinum cards and the type of cell phones you won’t find at Best Buy. Hotel options are mostly super-chic, luxurious and small – new properties can be no larger than 12 rooms, giving hoteliers an open invitation to charge a hefty premium.
