On-Site St. Thomas: What it’s Like to Stay at Bolongo Bay

More of that great Bolongo Bay beach/SBPR

Remember a few weeks ago when I set out to discover the soul of St. Thomas, that decidedly well-traveled sister island to my beloved St. Croix? I had high hopes of discovering the types of unique experiences, unexplained attractions and unmitigated “locals-only” fun that would support my theory that the uncommon exists in all Caribbean destinations, no matter how touristy. Over the course of the past year and change I had already successfully proven my theory in such popular ports as Grand Cayman, Aruba, Montego Bay and Grand Bahama Island. Surely St. Thomas would yield similar success, right…?!

Next up: My Search for the Real Soul of St. Thomas

Me cuttin' style in St. Thomas back in the day!

So far this year, our uncommon travels have taken Patrick and me to Barbados for our first trip together since we started this little blog, followed by a solo trip for me to Grand Cayman, and a 10-day sailing adventure of a lifetime in the Grenadines for Patrick. Deal of the Week: Iggies Beach Bar Turns 21, But You Get All the Gifts!

BSquared, TN via Flickr

It’s not every day that you’ll find us hyping a beach bar that’s on-property at an all-inclusive resort, much less one in all-too-common St. Thomas. But then again, Iggies is no ordinary beach bar, and the Bolongo Beach Resort where it’s located, is no ordinary all-inclusive resort.
Originally opened in 1974 as a small (36 rooms), family-owned/operated property high on friendly, attentive service and unbeatable value, Bolongo is one of the special few older Caribbean resorts that has grown and improved with the times while still remaining true to its roots. Legendary V.I. hoteliers Joyce and Dick Doumeng got the place off the ground, developing one of the region’s most successful independent hotels over Bolongo’s first 20+ years in business.

Saturday Video: Crucian Controversy Over St. Thomas Carnival

STT

If you’re not from the Virgin Islands, or have never lived there, you may find it hard to believe that there exists quite a healthy rivalry between St. Thomas and St. Croix. After all, both islands (along with neighboring St. John) have been united under various flags for centuries, sharing a number of culinary, cultural and other traditions.
Speaking as a born and bred Crucian, though, I can say that the rivalry is definitely there. It’s silly and often good-natured, but it’s there. I’m sure there are dozens of explanations for the root of the conflict, but for me, one of the biggest coincides with what is undoubtedly the best reason to be in St.
