Uncommon Attraction: Hike to the Heart of Statia’s Quill Volcano

UWI Seismic Research Centre via Flickr

After years of eschewing any/all calls of the wild, I seem to have settled into a once-a-year hiking routine. Earlier this year, I enjoyed a snake-filled solo-trek along The Mastic Trail in Grand Cayman. This followed a 2010 lover’s romp with my wife up and down The Source Trail in Nevis. Both journeys were fun and inspiring in their own special ways, but now, with 2012 just a few short days away, I’m planning an even more uncommon adventure to the very heart of a Caribbean volcano!

Saturday Video: Dominican Republic Surfing Adventure

dr

Our initial dabbling into the world of surfing has so far taken us to Barbados and Tobago. We’ve also touched on the wondrous waves in Rincón and St. Barts. As you might imagine coming from one of surfing’s most legendary brands, these are not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill travel packages.
For one thing, they don’t stick you in some McHotel with hordes of leisure lubbers solely bent on partying and playa time.

Sailing The Grenadines Part 5: Patrick vs. the Volcano

Not afraid of death by fire by Patrick Bennett

Here we are at the final chapter! Don’t forget to start with Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 or to visit Sail Oasis for more info on Caribbean charters.
It’s hard to deny that beauty and fire go hand in hand. Literary masters have long waxed poetically of “smoldering eyes,” “burning passions” and “carrying torches for lovers.” But in the case of our gorgeous Caribbean region, that “fire” is more than just a metaphor. Lurking just below the white, sandy beaches and serene rainforests burns a raging line of flames – one that stretches hundreds of miles from Antigua to Trinidad along the border of the Caribbean and North Atlantic tectonic plates.

Fit or Fat, There’s a Nature Hike to Suit You in Martinique

Jean & Nathalie via Flickr

Hiking can be intimidating. Once you start down a trail, you typically have to keep going until you reach the end, which can be a problem if the knee sprain you sustained playing pick-up hoops starts acting up, or you haven’t been quite as diligent with your workout regimen as you’d like.
It’s easy to see how injuries and poor fitness can deter even the most ardent nature lovers from pursuing hiking adventures, but it doesn’t have to be that way… Not in the Caribbean, anyway.
Many destinations throughout the region offer a variety of hikes to suit all fitness levels.
