Re-living Post-War Joy with the Music of Ernest Léardée at the Coco Bar in Martinique

Coco Bar at Hotel Bakoua, Martinique/SBPR

Those of us too young to have anything beyond a cursory textbook understanding of WWII can’t possibly imagine the joy that must’ve swept the world once the fighting stopped in Europe and the Pacific. Our unbridled celebrations today are generally reserved for the comparatively trite triumphs of our sports heroes, political reps and American Idols. Back in the early-1950s, though, there was real joy, real relief, optimism and an irrepressible joie-de-vivre vibe we can only dream about today.
Or so I thought until I spent an afternoon at the Coco Bar in Martinique last November.

On-Site Barbados: Surfer’s Bay Beach Bar – No Kooks, No Problems

Surfer's Bay Beach Bar

Luckily Surfer’s Bay Beach Bar isn’t exclusive to those with a penchant for getting tubed, pulling aerials or catching the perfect wave. All you need is a laid-back vibe and you’ll fit in perfectly at this idyllic beach bar on the southernmost tip of Barbados.
On our first visit last year after surfing the afternoon away with Boosy of Boosy’s Surf School, the small bonfire was crackling, lofting glowing embers into the West Indian evening, chill tunes we being pumped from hidden speakers, the open air seating area was lightly bustling with activity, the man behind the bar was flashing smiles at his thirsty flock, a beautiful young woman with a pleasant British accent floated among the crowd letting patrons know when their food orders were ready to be picked up and two local ladies were in the back kitchen efficiently preparing Bajan staples like macaroni pie and fried fish as well as more upscale fare like grilled tuna.

On-Site Barbados: Oistins Fish Market By Day, Another Side to Barbados’ Best Weekly Party

Oistins Fish Market By Day, Barbados by Patrick Bennett

Visitors to Barbados who miss the weekly fish fry Friday nights (and Saturday nights too, but Friday is generally better) in Oistins are missing what has become the best weekly, open air parties on the island. But don’t be so quick to dismiss Oistins as a one trick pony. For Uncommon Caribbean travelers, a visit to Oistins any day of the week during the day offers a special, more authentic cultural experience… And as a bonus, better prices.
Before the weekly parties came along, Oistins was already a major fishing community in Barbados’ Christ Church parish. On any given day for a couple hundred years, an armada of small, traditional fishing vessels have bobbed in Oistin Bay, fishermen have weaved nets on the shore, and stands have provided fresh fish for lucky patrons.

On-Site St. Croix: Rain Can’t Stop the Party at Rainbow Beach

Rhythms at Rainbow Beach, St. Croix/SBPR

Few places I’ve encountered on my many journeys throughout the Caribbean are as aptly named as Rainbow Beach on my home island of St. Croix. The reason has nothing to do with some sort of cheesy “This place is a treasure; like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!” sentiment either.
No, the thing about Rainbow Beach that makes its name fit so well is the fact that it rains there… a lot. It’s not the kind of overwhelming rain that can kill an entire day of outdoor fun, but rather a nice, brief and refreshing spritz that adds a welcome bit of cool to your beach day.

Saturday Video: Jammin’ with Lenny Kravitz in Eleuthera

Celebrities aren’t stupid – they love the Caribbean as much as we do! While most of them opt for the posh and ultra-exclusive, it’s not uncommon to find them living it up at such legendary local haunts as Maria’s in Old San Juan, Sunshine’s in Nevis and Billy Joe’s on Grand Bahama.
If you’re really keen on having a brush with fame, then Eleuthera is a place you’ll surely want to check out.
Long (about 110 miles) and thin (only a mile wide in some places), Eleuthera is one of those magical Bahamian islands where Mother Nature shows off the best of her artistic flair.
