On-Site Old San Juan: Brickhaus Bar Serves Sports with a Side of Samba

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m a really big football fan. College, NFL, high school – I’m always up for watching a game. I also really love Brazilian jazz. My tastes mostly skew toward old school artists like Gilberto Gil, Cesaria Evora and Stan Getz, but I’m also big on the stars of today – Bebel Gilberto, Céu and others. As you can imagine, it’s not often that these disparate loves come together, but when you travel the Uncommon Caribbean way you should always expect the unexpected.
While wandering around Old San Juan following my adventure in playing dominoes with a few locals, I happened upon a bar called Brickhaus.

On-Site Aruba: One Man’s Trash is Always a Treasure at Charlie’s Bar

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When you think oil and the Caribbean you mostly envision glistening beach bodies slathered in the sweet-smelling tanning potions purveyed by the likes of Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic and others. Less known, however, is the region’s long association with the other, darker and infinitely more valuable oil – Texas T, Black Gold – so essential to our modern daily lives.
Some of the largest oil refineries in the world can be found on a collection of small islands throughout the Caribbean, most dating back to the 1940′s and 50′s. The advent of these refineries has, over the years, spawned a unique sub-culture of oil men and women (mostly men), attracted to the region from such disparate lands as the Middle East, Russia, South America, the U.S.

On-Site Aruba: Wasting the Day Away at Moomba Beach Bar

Caribbean Pirate/SBPR

Of all the Caribbean destinations I’ve frequented in my nearly 20 years in travel & tourism PR, Aruba is probably the least uncommon… Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
There’s actually quite a lot to love about this special little Latin-infused Dutch paradise, even for the adventurous and culturally curious traveler. The thing is, you tend to have to search a little longer and a little harder for Aruba’s special charms. The reason: Disneyland.
That’s the nickname for the island’s gleaming tourist zone located in Aruba’s northwest corner along picture-perfect Palm Beach. I picked up the moniker from a couple locals I met while visiting the island last week.

On-Site Grand Bahama: Billy Joe’s Beach Bar

Billy Joe's on the beach at Our Lucaya/SBPR

When visiting large, sprawling resorts in the Caribbean’s most popular tourist destinations, humble beach shack bars like the one pictured here are not only far from your mind, they’re also usually far away. Imagine my surprise, then, at finding this place located about 15 paces from the pool deck at the far western end of the 1,200-room Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort.
Billy Joe’s Restaurant & Bar is a local institution in Grand Bahama. I first heard of it from a journalist friend soon after my PR agency signed Our Lucaya as our latest PR account this past summer, but details were sketchy as the writer last traveled to Grand Bahama 10 years ago.

On-Site Old San Juan: Double Your Pleasure at Anam

Heaven/SBPR

I just got back from a quick trip to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico where I had the chance to revisit many old haunts from my days working on the island’s public relations account some 15 or so years ago. Maria’s, El Patio de Sam, and the Parrot Club, among others, were all still there and all still great, but the highlight of the trip was discovering one of the city’s newest and most uncommon bars.
Anam has only been open for about eight months, but I have no doubt it will soon become a favorite spot for just about anyone who visits Old San Juan.

On-Site St. Maarten: Watching People Watching Planes Photo Essay

And for their efforts, the jets seem intent on crushing them.

Many visitors to St. Maarten flock to Sunset Bar on Maho Bay to experience an odd tourist attraction: an airport. Princess Juliana Airport to be exact.
You may have seen the amazing photos of jumbo jets passing just above the heads of beachgoers, but what really amazed us on our last visit was how strangely excited all the people were who had flown in from around the world, all the way to a gorgeous island in the Caribbean, teeming with topnotch restaurants, miles of immaculate clothing optional beaches, reefs overflowing with undersea life, 10′s of thousands of locals to meet, and more… Only to spend their day on the edge of a noisy airport.

Friday Happy Hour: Chairman’s, The #1 Rum For Young St. Lucians

chairman's-reserve-rum

Imagine this.
Your alarm goes off at 5:30am. Before long, you’re at the airport. Here you lament what’s become of air travel before hopping a flight. A few hours later, back on terra firma, you descend wobbly metal stairs from your plane into a warm and amazingly bright St. Lucia afternoon. The heat coming off the tarmac makes everything a little wiggly as you make your way to the terminal. It just smells like the Caribbean.
Once inside, you breeze through customs, then get a warm “good afternoon” and smile from your rental car agent. She leads you out to the parking lot, shows you the Jeep Wrangler that will act as your trusty transport for the next few days, and you’re off.
