Saturday Video: Kadooment is Coming!

As we’ve mentioned before, it’s Carnival time just about anytime somewhere in the Caribbean. Right now, the party’s in Barbados where the annual Crop Over Festival is in full swing. We plan to run a comprehensive post on the fete in a few days, but for now, we hope you’ll enjoy this video showcasing the event’s grand finale, Kadooment.

If you like what you see and want to get in on this year’s festivities, fear not: Kadooment is always held on the first Monday in August (this year it’s August 2nd), so there’s still time to grab your feathers, your flask and your flag, and get down there!

Saturday Video: For a Unique July 4th Celebration, Try St. John Carnival

It’s seemingly always Carnival time somewhere in the Caribbean, and the 4th of July is no exception. The prime Caribbean party spot for this important U.S. holiday: tiny St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Trust me, I know from experience.

Taking the Seaplane from St. Croix over to Cruz Bay for St. John Carnival with just a cooler of beer for luggage, no hotel reservations and very few inhibitions is one of my favorite memories of growing up in the Virgin Islands. Based on the video above from last year’s bacchanal, the good vibes surrounding the event just keep getting better.

It may not boast the sheer size and pageantry of Trinidad Carnival or Vincy Mas, but St. John Carnival is a good fete and a most unique way for Americans to celebrate their independence.

Anyway, enjoy the video, and if you’re in the U.S., the long weekend as well!

Saturday Video: One Place You Can’t Play Mas’

I may have Trini roots, but I must admit that I’ve never played mas’, a sin one of my aunts aims to rectify come Trinidad Carnival 2011. The pageantry of the event has always captivated me, though, especially the more elaborate costumes. In particular, I’ve often thought that it must be tough to get around wearing all that stuff. Well, this commercial confirms my suspicions in hilarious fashion…

Uncommon Beauty: Vincy Mas 2010

Did you miss out on Trinidad Carnival earlier this year? Not to worry; the line-up of annual Caribbean carnival celebrations still has a few major fetes in store for 2010. Among them, St. Vincent Carnival, better known as Vincy Mas.

The history of Carnival in St. Vincent dates back to the 1890s. For some 80+ years Vincy Mas was held on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, just as it still is today in Trinidad and elsewhere.

In 1976, much to the delight of revelers who previously had to choose between Vincy Mas and the log-jam of other pre-Lenten Carnivals, St. Vincent’s Carnival Development Committee (CDC) shifted the event from February/March to June/July.

The Don’t Stop the Carnival! spirit of this decision also extends to Vincy Mas itself, which stretches in 2010 from early-May to July.

The fun begins on May 8th with the official launch. Preliminary events, including the crowning of Miss St. Vincent & the Grenadines, are held throughout May and early-June.

Then, on June 25, the festival heats-up with a Ragga Soca fete. Junior Carnival, Pan Fest and Soca/Calypso competitions follow June 26-29.

After a couple days of rest, July 1st brings the pageantry of Panorama. This kicks off 6 straight days of mas, jouvert, street jump-up and outright revelry.

In St. Vincent, they like to say that Vincy Mas is the Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean. Judging by the photo above, who can argue?

For anyone who missed 2010 Trinidad Carnival, especially those suffering through “Snowmageddon” up north, here’s a photo to warm your soul. The Caribbean’s most renowned party, Trinidad Carnival is a vibrant celebration of immense size, pageantry and unmitigated joy. Of course, the costumes are pretty nice too. Revelers leave little to the imagination, making this the Caribbean’s premiere event for people-watching. Some 40,000 people – many of them hard bodies like this week’s beauty – traveled to Trinidad for Carnival this year. The dates for 2011 Trinidad Carnival are March 7 and 8; see you there!
