On-Site St. Martin: Communing with the Bats of La Grotte de Puits de Terres Basse

Bats of La Grotte de Puits de Terres Basse, St Martin

On my last two visits to St. Martin, I spent a lot of time on the beach. Whether it was whiling away my birthday in my birthday suit, taking in the sheer scale of Long Bay, or drinking rum infusions at Friar’s Bay, it just seemed like the right thing to do. I mean the island is world renowned for it’s 37 magical beaches—one for each square mile of this dual-state paradise. And when I wasn’t taking it easy on the sand, I was eating my way through some of the Caribbean’s very best cuisine along Restaurant Row in Grand Case.

Uncommon Photo-Op: Capturing the Rio Camuy Caves

Empalme Sinkhole/Jose Francisco

Last summer, we told you about the amazing natural wonder that is the Rio Camuy Caves in Puerto Rico. Today, we’re revisiting this most uncommon, awe-inspiring attraction through the lens of José Francisco, PHD.
Among the first photo pros to share his work with us on Flickr.com, José has captured some truly unique images in and around Puerto Rico, and elsewhere. These photos of Rio Camuy are extra special, though, especially considering the conditions. A novice like me might be able to score a few nice images in a beautifully historic location like Old San Juan, but Rio Camuy is made up of a bunch of caves.

Uncommon Attraction: Puerto Rico’s Amazing Rio Camuy Caves

Jose Oquendo via Flickr

The Caribbean is famous for its undersea treasures, something we’ve touched on here and here, but what’s less known is that the region is also home to some pretty amazing underground attractions. My favorite, and arguably the most impressive, is the Rio Camuy Cave Park in Puerto Rico.
Okay, really there is no argument: Rio Camuy is by far the most impressive underground attraction in the Caribbean. After all, there are only two other cave systems on the entire planet that approach the Rio Camuy Caves in size, and neither of them can boast a tropical underground river.
Located near the town of Arecibo on Puerto Rico’s north coast, the Rio Camuy Caves are part of an immense network of natural limestone caves and underground waterways carved out by the Camuy River, the third-largest underground river in the world. More than 10 miles of caverns, 220 caves and 17 entrances to the cave system have been mapped in the 52 years since the caves were officially “discovered,” though this is only a fraction of the entire system.

Archer Bay And Northern Barbados

Archer Bay beach

Heading up north in Barbados is a great way to get away from the bustle of Bridgetown and the hustle of the west coast. And if you’re going north, why not go all the way to North Point? Yes, we know, cruise ships herd tourists by the busload up to the Animal Flower Cave, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out… it just means you have to out smart the crowds!
First off, Mondays are the best day for this excursion as many cruise ships dock on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Next, set out early. If you’re on the west coast, 8:30am would be a good start.
