Maybe, Possibly the BEST Christmas Gift I’ve Ever Received

Bklyn Bennett's Black Cake/SBPR

December 26th has long been celebrated as Boxing Day throughout much of the Caribbean; an added extra day off after Christmas to allow for more re-connecting with family and friends, revelry and rum. Here in the States, though, the day after Christmas is mostly about one thing – RETURNS!
Americans are hauling an estimated $46 billion worth of gifts back to stores today, exchanging misfit toys and other assorted misguided presents for treasures they’ll truly treasure. Thanks to my brother/UC partner, Patrick, and his lovely wife, I won’t be one of them!

Taste of the Caribbean: Cooking up Some Coconut Candy

Coconut Candy I made last night/SBPR

Costumed kiddos will soon be knocking on doors all across America, and while it’s a good idea to make sure you have more than enough store-bought sweets to satiate the Halloween surge, I’m sure a few of you may also want to go the extra mile and prepare something extra special for your favorite trick or treaters. For you, we offer one of the Caribbean’s sweetest treats: Coconut Candy!

Taste of the Caribbean: I Was Crazy Not to Love Currant Rolls

Currant Roll/SBPR

I don’t know a whole lot about the sweet and tasty dessert treat pictured here. Unlike so many of the other edible goodies my Trinidadian parents used to share with me and my brothers during our early years in St. Croix, I don’t ever remember a time when currant rolls were on the menu.
Now that I’ve had a chance to try ‘em, though, the reason is clear – they didn’t want to share!
Okay, that’s probably not true. More likely, our Americanized childhood taste buds pushed us more toward Snickers, Twix and other such processed stateside sweets. Youth is indeed wasted on the young…
Try just one little taste of currant roll and you’ll instantly note the error in our youthful ways.

Friday Happy Hour: Doubly Sweet Dos Maderas P.X.

Dos Maderas at the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival/SBPR

This week marks one of those rare occasions when my brother/UC partner, Patrick, and I are in the same city – New York – where he lives and I just happen to be visiting on business. This happy happenstance has given rise, predictably, to some choice sampling of our favorite rums. Last night, we even got a chance to share our rum fun with a few of you, our fabulous readers, during our very first meet-up at Lani Kai down in SOHO.
If it sounds strange that we devout devotees to all things Caribbean would host a meet-up at a Hawaii-themed bar, well, it shouldn’t.

Taste of the Caribbean: Sweet ‘n Sour Tamarind Balls

Tamarind Balls/SBPR

Next to genips, my deep affection for which we outlined here, my other all-time favorite island fruit has got to be tamarinds. Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around discovering a hidden tamarind tree laden with fruit while trekking through the bush on some imaginary exploration mission with my brothers. Finding tamarinds was akin to finding treasure; a reward for our quest. This is actually quite fitting as the mighty tamarind itself had to undertake quite a mighty quest just to get to the Caribbean at all.
Like the majority of people living in the Caribbean today, tamarind trees are indigenous to Africa and only started appearing in the region in the 16th century.

Taste of the Caribbean: It’s Just Not Easter Without Bun & Cheese

Jamaican Easter Bun/SBPR

Christianity being the overwhelmingly dominant religion throughout the Caribbean, it stands to follow that the upcoming Easter Holiday is a big deal in most islands.
Check that: IT’S A VERY BIG DEAL in every Caribbean island I know.
Like the colorful Caribbean Christmas Holiday traditions we shared a few months ago, Easter in our islands means getting together with friends and family, taking part in special celebrations and enjoying a range of unique eats and drinks emblematic of the season. As we did at Christmas, we hope to share a few of those traditions with you throughout the coming weeks. First up is the yummy Jamaican treat pictured above.

Taste of the Caribbean: My Big Brother’s Bad-Ass Cruzan Rum Balls

All gone.../SBPR

Nothing says “Damn, that was tasty!” quite like an empty plate, bowl, or in this case, a whole freakin’ tin! See the one pictured above? It was once chock-full of the yummiest dessert treats to arrive on my doorstep during the 2010 Christmas Season – homemade Cruzan Rum Balls!
The gourmet goodies came courtesy of my (and Patrick’s) big brother, Peter. We haven’t introduced you to Peter during the 11 months since Patrick and I started hosting the Uncommon Caribbean party because… well… he says he’s a bit too busy to share his travel tales. It’s not like he doesn’t have interesting stories to tell either.
