Friday Happy Hour: Grog, a British Naval Tradition Since 1655

grog

One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak…
This little rhyme was once the most coveted drink recipe in the British Royal Navy. A little rum-soaked sonnet adapted from Barbadian origins and flown across the high seas of the Caribbean. Evoked for both medicinal and celebratory reasons, these 12 words were not just a suggestion, but a standard that kept British sailors buoyant and the ship’s purser honest. Known in some circles as spelldeck or punch, you’ve likely heard of this royal ration by its more common name - Grog.
The British Royal Navy began doling out rum rations in 1655, shortly after their momentous victory over the Spanish in Jamaica.

Friday Happy Hour: Solomons Key

Solomons Key

St. Croix has always beckoned to those seeking paradise. Escapist romantics, fortune hunters, families, artists, pirates, drifters – all have found solace on her warm and welcoming shores. As a result, a broad swath of cultures have integrated on our little piece of protruding rock – our own Crucian Melting Pot.
One group in particular has stood out to me, specifically in the face of disaster, as a true friend of the Virgin Islands. I’m talking about our friends and neighbors from the Middle East – Lebanese and Pakistani families who have made a great life for themselves among St. Croix’s countless other cultures, while also greatly benefiting the island community at-large.

Friday Happy Hour: Picture-Perfect Piton Beer

piton

As those of you who follow us on Facebook already know, Patrick is heading to St. Lucia today in search of “uncommon” stories to share with us in the coming weeks.
In honor of his latest adventure, we’re celebrating this Friday Happy Hour with the first thing he’ll undoubtedly drink upon stepping off his nonstop JetBlue flight from NY – Piton Beer.
Named in honor of St. Lucia’s iconic Piton Mountains, Piton Beer is a product of the island’s Windward and Leeward Brewery Limited, which was established by Heineken back in 1974.
Unlike Biere Lorraine from Martinique or Barbados’ Banks Beer, Piton doesn’t have a long and storied history (St.

Friday Happy Hour: Smooth Criminal

criminal

It was a sad day on the Rock last year as we watched the stirring hoopla surrounding the death of Michael Jackson. Well, I reckon as a fan of such majestic Zombie repertoire as Thriller, the least I could do was make a drink in respect.

Ingredients

2 oz pear/ginger infused rum
1/2 oz Cointreau
1 egg white
1/4 teaspoon sugar
2 oz soda water

Ingredients for infusion:

1 bottle Cruzan Light rum
3 large Bosc Pears
4 0z Ginger

The Smooth Criminal
First we need to infuse our Cruzan Light rum.
Take 3 large Bosc pears and dice them into 1/2 inch cubes.

Friday Happy Hour: Support Haiti, Drink Rhum Barbancourt

rhum-barbancourt-thumbnail

Today’s Friday Happy Hour drink of choice was inspired by faithful Uncommon Caribbean reader, Mike Moore.
Like us, Mike loves rum. He’s particularly keen on the sweet, sweet nectar found in the bottle pictured at left, Haiti’s Rhum Barbancourt.
Mike’s got good taste.
Barbancourt is made directly from sugar cane juice rather than the sugar cane by-product of molasses, a method similar to that employed in the production of the rhums agricole of Martinique. The result is a richer, more flavorful spirit more akin to a fine cognac.
Last week, when Mike went to his local South Florida liquor store, the check-out guy told him that the Barbancourt distillery was destroyed in January’s tragic earthquake and no one has an idea if or when it’ll come back.

Friday Happy Hour: Vexed Valencia

Vexed Valencia WWW.KELLYGREERPHOTOGRAPHER.COM

Today’s inventive libation came to be as most of our favorites have – after midnight at the bar and completely by chance.
It was a fun Saturday night. The staff and a few good customers were hanging out after we locked up for the night. I had made a batch of Orangecello earlier that day and had a half dozen zested oranges left over. I needed to use ‘em up before they turned to the dark side (went bad), but how?
For inspiration I turned to my favorite dishwasher, Valencia. A funny, sweetheart of a lady, Valencia is the hardest working Grandmother I know.

Friday Happy Hour: Cruzan Single Barrel Sour

Single Barrel Sour

Uncommon Caribbean already introduced you to Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum, so I’ll forgo another round of reviewing its accolades, but I will add my two cents. Normally, I would be reticent to add more than a couple ice cubes to this fantastic rum, but after tasting several high end rums side by side against Single Barrel, I found that this 12 year blended rum from Cruzan still maintains most of its delicate notes, while the other brands fell flat after dilution. So with spring having sprung and Bitter Curacao Oranges falling off the trees in my backyard, I bring you the Single Barrel Sour.
