Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Montserrat’s Volcanic Running Inspiration

Bush rum, black sand beaches, brutal hills and a towering inferno? It can only mean one thing!
Registration is now open for the Montserrat Volcano Half-Marathon!
Now’s your chance to valiantly walk run in the footsteps of arguably our most adventurous trip ever! Last year’s race featured an overall altitude change of over 6,000 feet that roughly 40 adventurous runners (minus myself, unfortunately) tackled with an enthusiasm that could only have been fueled by the promise of alcoholic beverages at the finish line. Our own Dave Keener represented Uncommon Caribbean admirably in my stead. If you missed it, you should really check out his video recap of the whole run for a first-hand perspective.

I’m Running Around an Active Volcano… What are You Doing for Thanksgiving?

Woodlands Beach, Montserrat

Editor’s note: A couple weeks ago, Patrick shared a post on how his training is coming along, err, not coming along for the upcoming Montserrat Half Marathon. Today, we have an update from Patrick’s running mate, Dave Keener….
It’s true. This Thanksgiving, there will be an empty chair at my Uncle Tom’s house in Morris County, New Jersey. My friend Patrick and I will be on our way to the island of Montserrat to take part in the 2nd annual Volcano Half-Marathon.
I love telling people here in New York that I’m running a half-marathon in Montserrat. First, there is the look of admiration, realizing they stand before a real man of adventure in an age with so few heroes.

How to go From Fit to Fat in 30 Days – Journey to the Montserrat Half

My knee MRI

A month and a half ago I announced that I would be representing Uncommon Caribbean in the 2nd annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon with the help of my friend Dave Keener. I promised training updates sprinkled with a little rum and possibly a roti or two.
So, what happened?
Well, a funny thing happened on the way to winning marathon gold at the foot of an active volcano: I tore the meniscus in my right knee. The pain was such that I simply couldn’t run. I hesitated posting an update and basically wished it away… It didn’t go away.
Some people I mention this to make it sound like no big deal.

Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon, Here We Come!

Montserrat by rachel_thecat via Flickr

Yes, you read correctly. I’ll be representing Team Uncommon Caribbean in the 2nd annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon!
This is one West Indian event simply too uncommon to pass up. Not only does it take place on the beautiful, yet woefully under-visited island of Montserrat, but the “rugged & strenuous” course also promises to be a very hilly one with spectacular sea-views all along the way. Oh, and of course there’s the active Soufriere Hills Volcano to contend with…
This is the same volcano that, after a long period of dormancy, erupted in 1995 burying the old capitol of Plymouth under a fast-moving pyroclastic cloud of superheated rock and debris, and has remained active ever since.
