Stalag Riddims in Honor of the Late Winston Riley

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The music world suffered a pair of great losses last weekend as the legendary Etta James was joined in leaving this world by Jamaica‘s own Winston Riley.
Now I’m sure most of you know the name Etta James. Even if you didn’t know of her previously, the extensive recent news reports of her passing surely have you up to speed now.
Winston Riley? Yeah, his name is a bit more obscure to most. His music, on the other hand, is definitely not.

Songs to Help you Add an Island Vibe to Your Thanksgiving Day

Austin's Palms

The notion of thanks and praise plays so prominently in reggae that it’s hard to imagine a genre of music better suited for today’s Thanksgiving holiday here in the States. To help you add a little island vibe to your turkey, football and family fun, I’ve put together another 8tracks mix of songs, each carrying themes of thanks.

Saturday Soundtrack: Songs to Help You Celebrate Halloween, Caribbean-Style

devil

Halloween is a little more than a week away! Excitement is building here in the States, of course, but in much of the Caribbean no one cares.
As we outlined last year, Halloween isn’t much celebrated in the Caribbean, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our own spooky traditions, haunted attractions, monsters, spirits and other supernatural phenomena to ensure kids stay tucked in their beds at night. To help you add a little Caribbean “spirit” to your Halloween fun, I’ve put together another 8tracks mix of songs highlighting some of our favorite West Indian frights.

Saturday Soundtrack: Steve’s Travelin’ Music

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A few weeks ago, UC-reader Selena Romano posted the following query to our Facebook page:

DO you guys have a travel playlist? What do you listen to when you want to be brought back to the islands you have seen?

This is great question, though one that I think should be answered in two parts – the first focusing on the tunes that tend to form the soundtrack of my current travels, and the second detailing the music that takes me back to my previous island adventures.
(I’m sure Patrick will want to chime-in with his own playlist sometime in the near future, especially since he was once a deejay with one of the top radio stations back in St.

Introducing One Love, the New Children’s Book by Cedella Marley

book

Like the good and doting uncle that I am, I’m already getting excited for my new nephew’s first Christmas later this year! Yes, I know it’s still summer, but I can’t help it. I mean, have you seen him? Super cute, right? If you ever get to meet him, though, you’ll see quickly that good looks are just the half of it. Trinidad, like the island for which he was named, is just plain awesome.
So, what awesome gift will this awesome young man be receiving from his favorite uncle for his very first Christmas?
First off, I want to be sure to spoil him really good, so he should expect to see more than one box bearing Fort Lauderdale post marks under his tree.

Saturday Soundtrack: Sunset in Jamaica

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ahh, sunset in Jamaica… It’s a magical time filled with amazing sights, sounds and, quite often… smoke. When I snapped this image of the sun setting over Tek it Easy Island at this popular Montego Bay resort last Friday, you could say there was a bit of a haze in the air.
I was inspired by the moment to share a few of my favorite reggae songs today that would make an ideal soundtrack for just such a scene. Peter Tosh, Barrington Levy and Jacob Miller are a few of the names featured in the mix that you might recognize, but lesser-known artists like Big Joe, Jah-T and the Reggae Crusaders are also included.

Honoring Bob Marley Through the Magic of His Music, Then and Now

shot

I was only 10 years old, but I can still remember bits and pieces about the day Bob Marley died. It was exactly 30 years ago today, and while I don’t remember what day of the week it was, I know for sure that we were at school. I know this because I vividly remember coming home and noting that a few things were amiss.
For one thing, the TV was off. In those days, popular daytime soap operas like All My Children and General Hospital would air during the afternoon hours in St. Croix. My Mom loved them, especially All My Children, but she wasn’t watching them that day.
