Deal of the Week: A Romantic Hilltop Escape in Martinique

A Suite at Plein Soleil/Patrick Bennett

Maybe it’s the rhum. Maybe it’s the food. Maybe it’s the amazing natural beauty. Maybe it’s all of the above… Whatever the reason, Martinique is undeniably among the most romantic islands I’ve ever set foot on.

Martinique is French, after all. Better still, it’s in the Caribbean. Take a bit of that legendary Parisian predisposition toward all things l’amour and combine it with the sultry allure of the Caribbean and you have a recipe for romance rivaling just about anywhere outside of the Eiffel Tower itself.

For further proof, see The Thomas Crown Affair. You know, the 1999 film starring Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo with the sizzling tropical island getaway scenes… You guessed it, they were filmed in Martinique.

While the actual hilltop villa featured in the film is not available for rental, many comparable options abound for romantics wishing to get their Thomas Crown Affair on in the Isle of Flowers. One of my personal favorites is Le Plein Soleil Hotel.

The living room in the main building at Plein Soleil/SBPR

Located in the breezy hills above the seaside village of Le Francois on Martinique’s picturesque Atlantic coast, Plein Soleil is an intimate and stylish boutique property comprised of 16 artfully decorated guestrooms and suites. Rooms are spread among five colorful villas, each designed in the style of creole cases, or petite houses adorned with wooden fretwork. Many also have small, private plunge pools.

Talk about off the beaten path, you literally have to traverse through a banana plantation to get to Plein Soleil! It’s not a smooth ride either as the nondescript dirt road provides absolutely no hint of the chic hideaway at its zenith.

The going may be a little rough getting to Plein Soleil, but once you’re there everything’s easy. At every turn the property denotes elegance and class. Bright whites accentuate vibrant Caribbean colors, local artwork, straw creations and special touches from Asia. The tropical colors extend to the lush landscaping, which frames the dramatic hilltop vistas nicely, and the gourmet cuisine, which ranks among the best on the island.

The thing that always impresses me most about Plein Soleil (I’ve visited the property six times in the past four years) is the service. The owner, Jean-Christophe Yoyo, and his staff go way out of their way to make guests feel at home. Don’t be surprised, for instance, if one of your servers at breakfast is Mr. Yoyo himself. If you need to iron a shirt while visiting the property, as I have on several occasions, don’t expect the staff to deliver an iron and ironing board to your room. Nope, they’ll just do it for you…with a smile.

Fine dining is always on the menu at Plein Soleil/SBPR

As you may have guessed, I truly love Plein Soleil. My only gripe is that I’m always there alone while traveling on business. Sitting there at night on the wooden deck that hugs the hotel’s dining area, a bottle of fine French wine my only companion, I can only dream of sharing this special place with my wife…some day…

For those who can make a “some day” escape to this hilltop hideaway sooner rather than later, Plein Soleil is offering a Sixth Night Free promo on hotel stays through September 30, 2010. They’ll even throw in complimentary daily breakfast. In total, you’ll save a minimum of about $300 give or take as the exchange rate with the Euro goes.

For reservations and more information, contact Plein Soleil via email at pleinsoleil1@wanadoo.fr.

Friday Happy Hour: Single Barrel Shipwreck

Single Barrel Shipwreck

Single Barrel Shipwreck

Not too long ago, our friend RumShopRyan stopped by Uncommon Caribbean for a chat about two of our favorite things: women and rum. Blessed, as I am, with expertise in both, I wanted to take this opportunity to follow up with my own two cents.

Successfully courting the ladies on vacation in the Caribbean can be a difficult minefield to maneuver. Stiff competition from boys who share “similar goals”, small windows of opportunity and unfortunate sunburns are just a few of the obstacles you face. But the worst mistake I see repeated all the time is guys falling victim to the glorious bounty of free flowing booze.

Lesson One: Don’t be That Guy

Copious amounts of Jager Bombs and shots of 151 may lead you to believe that you look like a hearty man; fun, interesting, cool and refined. In reality you look just like that tool down the bar you’ve been making fun of all night (you know, the other one flexing for the same gaggle of girls between you). The bartender might keep serving you, but you’re not impressing anyone except your equally inebriated friends. Remember, the goal is to avoid going home with them. No late-night roti will help you sober up enough to amend the mistakes of a day full of bromance shots, so have a few, but try not to force yourself to be included in every round.

Lesson Two: Chicks dig guys that drink with style

Sure, Rum & Cokes may get you through the afternoon, but when you saddle up to a good bar for dinner your drink should demonstrate that you’re more than a one demensional party boy. You can still maintain a good buzz (which we know makes you wittier and more attractive) without slamming down the same tired throwback.

Try one of these next time, a fun play on the Manhattan with a devious Caribbean twist – introducing the Single Barrel Shipwreck.

Ingredients:
  • 2oz Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum
  • 1oz Carpano Antica Vermouth
  • 1 barspoon Hibiscus bitters
  • Cruzan Blackstrap Flotsam

Combine Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum, Carpano and Hibiscus bitters over ice. Stir for 30 seconds and strain into a chilled Martini glass. Float Cruzan Blackstrap on top.

Now, dignified drink in hand, you’re ready for the big leagues.

Lesson Three: Remember Lesson One

Here you are with a nice cocktail in hand, looking dashing and adventurous, so just sip that sucker! This isn’t a race, slow down and take your time. Hopefully there is a long night ahead of you.

Remember, your Single Barrel Shipwreck has the same amount of booze as TWO Rum & Cokes. Don’t chug this guy and turn into That Guy.

Cheers!

Get Married at Nisbet Plantation & Your Love Will Grow – Literally!

Nisbet Wedding Palms/SBPR

As those of you who follow us on Facebook and twitter already know, I just returned from my first-ever trip to Nevis, where I was fortunate enough to stay at the fabulous Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. As I remarked in an earlier post, Nisbet ranks among the premiere spots for romance in the Caribbean, ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries (I was celebrating my 10th), destination weddings, or any other reason to steal away to the islands with the one you love.

Nisbet Love Muffin/SBPR

Even the muffins they serve at breakfast are shaped like hearts, so you can tell that romance is always a priority here.

If you choose to get married at Nisbet, you can also rest-assured that your love (or at least a living symbol of it) will continue to grow long after you’ve checked-out. That’s because the property plants a new coconut palm like the one pictured above for every wedding they host.

The Wedding Palms program, which started back in 2008, underscores Nisbet’s romantic allure, while also enhancing one of the property’s signature features, the Avenue of the Palms.

A strikingly beautiful stretch of lawn extending from Nisbet’s 18th-century Great House down to the beach, the Avenue of Palms guides visitors along one the most scenic routes to any beach I’ve ever enjoyed. Strolling here, in and amongst the trees with the sea breeze blowing in your face, it’s impossible not to think back to the royal dignitaries and other notable historic figures who once trod the same ground over the centuries.

View of Nisbet's Avenue of Palms from the Great House/SBPR

If you appreciate history like I do, it’s an incredible walk.

This is the place where the British Navy hero Horatio Nelson met Frances “Fanny” Nisbet, niece of the President of Nevis and widow of a Dr. Nisbet, who owned the Plantation. Nelson and Nisbet were married  in 1787 at the nearby Fig Tree Church. Prince William Henry, who was then the Duke of Clarence, but later became King William IV of England, gave the bride away.

Okay, so the Nelson-Nisbet marriage didn’t end so well; you still have living, breathing romantic history here in a gorgeous setting that’s tough to match. Who wouldn’t want to have their blessed union preserved in such a storied place for the ages?

At the very least, you’ll always have a reason to return to Nevis to make sure your tree’s health matches that of your marriage…

Uncommon Beauty: Wedded Bliss, Island Style

Theo Meijer Photography via Flickr

Tying the knot the traditional way – staid ceremony at your local place of worship followed by stale reception complete with cheesy wedding singer and regrettable speeches – is beyond blasé. Today’s brides and grooms want exotic. They want unique. They want a destination wedding in the Caribbean.

Lots of full-service and all-inclusive resorts offer destination wedding packages. Some, like the Free Caribbean Wedding program offered by Holiday Inn Resorts Caribbean, include just about everything, even the cake, at little or no cost above what you’d pay for a normal resort stay. Best of all, the resorts take care of all the paperwork and legal issues, making this the easiest, most stress-free option.

But let’s say you want to take exotic and unique up a notch or 2 by handling all the details yourself. Here’s where it gets tricky. The Caribbean may be 1 big wonderful region, but within that region are 30+ individual countries, each with their own unique laws and requirements for destination weddings (and everything else).

Picking the right destination for your nuptials, then, will take some research. Here are a few tips to help get you started…

Easiest islands for U.S. couples
Not surprisingly, U.S. couples won’t encounter too many hurdles in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. There’s an 8-day waiting period in the USVI, though U.S. couples don’t actually need to be in the islands to meet the requirement, so really there is no waiting requirement (typical Crucian confusion). Puerto Rico calls for a battery of blood tests and a health certificate from a local doctor, but other than that, it’s a fairly painless process similar to the States. Of course, you won’t need a passport either, adding to the ease and convenience.

No Waiting
Outside of the U.S. islands, other Caribbean destinations with no waiting period include Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, and the Cayman Islands. You can basically just arrive, grab 2 witnesses, and get hitched – assuming your paperwork is in order and your fees have been paid, of course.

Speaking of Fees…
Marriage license and legal fees vary widely  from island to island, even between the U.S. destinations. Getting married in Puerto Rico will only set you back $2, while in the USVI the cost is $200. In the French Caribbean islands there is no fee at all. Sounds good, but bear in mind that there is a 30-day residency requirement, which kind of kills the cash-savings. If you have the time and means, though, there are few better places to be “stuck” for a month. The best fee/waiting period combo is probably Suriname, where couples pay just $8 and only have to wait 1 day. Grenada’s 5-day waiting period and $15 cost are a good value option as well. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the $286 you’ll have to fork out to get married in St. Maarten.

Quirks
The Caribbean’s colorful cultures and religious traditions carry a few quirks when it comes to destination weddings. Catholics wishing to get married in Anguilla, for instance, must provide 3-6 months notice. If you want to get married in a Christian Church in the BVI’s, marriage banns must be published on 3 consecutive Sundays or Saturdays prior to the ceremony. You’ll definitely want to be aware of these and other quirks well in advance of your wedding date.

Deal of the Week: Sultry Summer Offer from Nisbet Plantation

Courtesy Nisbet Plantation

There’s a lot to love about Nisbet Plantation in Nevis, especially for lovers. Don’t get me wrong – families can enjoy magical vacation experiences here too, but just look at this place. It doesn’t scream romance (that would be too bourgeois) so much as it whispers it, gently; a soft kiss sure to follow.

Classic properties like this are a real treat to me. Service and pampering here are born of an established tradition enjoyed by the traveling elite for generations. At the same time, all the modern amenities found at today’s newest resorts are readily available. Two of my favorites at Nisbet: free Wifi (not as widely available at Caribbean resorts as you might think) and complimentary use of a Flip digital video camera to capture vacation memories. Nice.

For summer 2010, you can save on all the niceness at Nisbet Plantation by taking advantage of the resort’s Sultry Summer promo, which rewards guests with a free night on stays of 5 nights or more. Eligible resort stays must take place between May 1 and August 8, 2010.

As an added bonus, couples staying 7 nights or more will receive free transfers from the airports in Nevis (NEV) or St. Kitts (SKB). Guests arriving in St. Kitts will be greeted at the airport and transported to a private water taxi for the short boat ride to Nevis. Couples staying 6 nights or less receive 50% off airport transfers.

The Sultry Summer offer is available in all room categories, including the Premier rooms overlooking the ocean. Daily rates, which include full breakfast served ocean side, afternoon tea and 3-course dinner in the AAA Four Diamond-rated Great House, begin at $365 for a Superior Room based on double occupancy.

For reservations, call Nisbet Plantation toll-free at 1-800-742-6008.

See you there!

Tuesday 2 Cents: Brian Green

courtesy f&g events

Uncommon Caribbean recently caught up with Brian Green, a born and bred Bajan now living in Atlanta, who has a knack for making dream weddings a reality. This former hotel executive and Barbados Tourism Authority official routinely “brings out the fabulous” for even the most discerning brides and grooms in his role as CEO/Dream-Maker at F&G Events. Here’s what he had to say about the romantic side of his home island…

UC: Most romantic spot in Barbados to pop the question?

Brian: If I had to pick just one, my favorite would be atop Bathsheba (East Coast of Barbados) overlooking the famous Rock and all of the East Coast. A close second would be a sunset catamaran cruise along the West Coast. Of course, you can never go wrong with dinner at The Cliff Restaurant, an unbelievably romantic setting sure to spur the right answer.

UC: Best destination wedding spot on Barbados?

Brian: For me, nothing beats The Crane Hotel. The pool area, with its surrounding gardens and cliff-top setting above the beach, is simply amazing. St. James Parish Church is another great option. It’s right on the water and is the oldest parish Church on the island, first erected in 1628.

UC: No honeymoon in Barbados would be complete without ____ .

Brian: Dinner at Pisces, St Lawrence Gap. The place just oozes romance: amazing food, amazing waterfront location.

UC: What 1 thing would most surprise people to know about Barbados?

Brian: The one thing that would surprise people about Barbados is the ease of which we live and enjoy life.  In fact the motto LONG LIVE LIFE is the new slogan for the island, and it truly fits. We enjoy life to the fullest; we embrace everyone as a friend; and we encourage you to stay a while and recharge your batteries. With 75 daytime activities to enjoy, a slew of world renowned restaurants to savor and vistas that will make you feel the island was hand crafted just for your enjoyment – Barbados epitomizes what a vacation should be!
