A Royal Honeymoon Option for Prince Wills & Kate

Montpelier Plantation, Nevis/SBPR

So, where were you on July 29, 1981? I was vacationing with my parents and two brothers in Orlando on the second of our action-packed family trips away from our home in St. Croix to some new and wondrous place called Disney World. Somewhere around four or five o’clock that morning, Mom and Dad made sure us kids got up to watch TV. Must-see TV events were few and far between in those days, but my parents stressed that the morning’s programming was of historical importance; one of those events that we’d always remember where we were when it happened.
And so it was that all of us huddled around a small TV in the equally small room we shared at a roadside Holiday Inn to join 750 million people around the world in watching the royal wedding of Charles and Diana.

Taste of the Caribbean: Dinner at The Great House, Nisbet Plantation

The Great House Dining Room/courtesy Nisbet Plantation

As noted in previous posts stemming from my trip to Nevis with my wife back in June, St. Kitts’ sister island is a seriously romantic place. Lush and exotic tropical surroundings, charming plantation inns, warm smiles and a Killer Bee or two can have a profound effect on even the most boorish of blessed unions. I know from experience, of course, since the whole purpose of our trip was for me to make up for missing our 10th wedding anniversary the year before.
Hiking The Source trail went a long way toward mending the marital fences, but I knew that if I was to get all the way back into my wife’s good graces nothing less than a truly memorable dinner would do.

Deal of the Week: A Romantic Hilltop Escape in Martinique

The living room in the main building at Plein Soleil/SBPR

Maybe it’s the rhum. Maybe it’s the food. Maybe it’s the amazing natural beauty. Maybe it’s all of the above… Whatever the reason, Martinique is undeniably among the most romantic islands I’ve ever set foot on.
Martinique is French, after all. Better still, it’s in the Caribbean. Take a bit of that legendary Parisian predisposition toward all things l’amour and combine it with the sultry allure of the Caribbean and you have a recipe for romance rivaling just about anywhere outside of the Eiffel Tower itself.
For further proof, see The Thomas Crown Affair. You know, the 1999 film starring Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo with the sizzling tropical island getaway scenes… You guessed it, they were filmed in Martinique.

Friday Happy Hour: Single Barrel Shipwreck

Single Barrel Shipwreck

Not too long ago, our friend RumShopRyan stopped by Uncommon Caribbean for a chat about two of our favorite things: women and rum. Blessed, as I am, with expertise in both, I wanted to take this opportunity to follow up with my own two cents.
Successfully courting the ladies on vacation in the Caribbean can be a difficult minefield to maneuver. Stiff competition from boys who share “similar goals”, small windows of opportunity and unfortunate sunburns are just a few of the obstacles you face. But the worst mistake I see repeated all the time is guys falling victim to the glorious bounty of free flowing booze.

On-Site Nevis: Rekindling Romance Along ‘The Source’ Hiking Trail

The Source Trail, Nevis/SBPR

I never had any intention of hiking when I traveled to Nevis last month. After all, I was staying at the posh Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, the #1 Caribbean property on Travel + Leisure’s prestigious World’s Best List for 2010. I anticipated a long weekend of relaxing, fine dining and pampering at the hands of the wonderful staff of this legendary property… and not much else.
At the same time, though, I had EVERY intention of doing whatever my wife, Kelly, wanted to do on this trip. It’s rare that Kelly gets to tag along on my travel adventures, and considering I missed our 10th wedding anniversary while enjoying one such adventure last November, I felt it best that I remain 100% open and amenable to her whims lest I be cast out on a long solo hike off a short cliff.

Get Married at Nisbet Plantation & Your Love Will Grow – Literally!

Nisbet Love Palms/SBPR

As those of you who follow us on Facebook and twitter already know, I just returned from my first-ever trip to Nevis, where I was fortunate enough to stay at the fabulous Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. As I remarked in an earlier post, Nisbet ranks among the premiere spots for romance in the Caribbean, ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries (I was celebrating my 10th), destination weddings, or any other reason to steal away to the islands with the one you love.
Even the muffins they serve at breakfast are shaped like hearts, so you can tell that romance is always a priority here.

Uncommon Beauty: Wedded Bliss, Island Style

wedded-bliss

Tying the knot the traditional way – staid ceremony at your local place of worship followed by stale reception complete with cheesy wedding singer and regrettable speeches – is beyond blasé. Today’s brides and grooms want exotic. They want unique. They want a destination wedding in the Caribbean.
Lots of full-service and all-inclusive resorts offer destination wedding packages. Some, like the Free Caribbean Wedding program offered by Holiday Inn Resorts Caribbean, include just about everything, even the cake, at little or no cost above what you’d pay for a normal resort stay. Best of all, the resorts take care of all the paperwork and legal issues, making this the easiest, most stress-free option.
