All You Can Jet with JetBlue to Some of Our Favorite Destinations

That’s right, JetBlue is once again offering their All You Can Jet plan, where for one low price ($699) you can fly as much as you like between September 7th and October 6th. Certainly an uncommon offer, but when you cross reference JetBlue‘s route-map with the locations that I, myself, have visited since we launched Uncommon Caribbean just a few short months ago, something becomes obvious.

I ♥ JetBlue.

So far this year some combination of my wife and I have jetted via JetBlue from New York to Barbados, St. LuciaSt. Maarten/St. Martin and The Dominican Republic to find uncommon stories to share with you. The fact that we’ve flown exclusively with JetBlue is no accident. In a lot of ways, we chose our destinations based on where JetBlue flies – that’s love!

And now, someone with a little time on their hands can easily and affordably follow in our footsteps. Learn to surf in Barbados. Take a volcanic mud bath in St. Lucia. Go au naturel on the beaches of St. Martin. And while it may not be whale watching season in the Dominican Republic, there’s still caving, waterfalls, the great food and, of course, the gorgeous beaches.

So, who’s up for a month of Caribbean exploration? Click here for details

Deal of the Week: Web-Only Savings of 20% Off Blue Tulum

Courtesy Blue Tulum Golf & Spa Resort

Seis de Mayo – the dreaded day after.

Most of us overdid it last night reveling in memory of that most unlikely of military triumphs by the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Wait, what? I lifted my annual 364-day ban on killing my brain with tequila for the battle of where?

That’s right, Cinco de Mayo is not the independence celebration that most of us think it is (Mexican Independence Day is actually September 16). Apparently, Corona’s favorite holiday isn’t even celebrated very widely in Mexico.

No matter, Uncommon Caribbean likes a good party and really any reason will do. But here, now, amidst the wreckage of another epic fiesta, we’re ready for an escape to Tulum.

Located 2 hours south of the endless Cinco de Mayo that is Cancun (1 hour south of Playa del Carmen, the Yucatan’s other party zone), Tulum’s tranquil, laid-back vibe is the perfect antidote for any hangover. Pristine, uncrowded beaches, friendly faces and the majestic Mayan Ruins in Tulum make this an ideal vacation spot, no matter your condition.

No raging keggers. No Girls Gone Wild.

For accommodations in Tulum, you can’t do much better than the Blue Tulum Golf & Spa Resort. Don’t let the name fool you, though: this is not a sprawling mega-complex.

Blue Tulum is comprised of only 96 suites, each with its own Jacuzzi. Golf may be its middle name, but the links, and the crowds they can attract, are conveniently located a few miles away. There’s also no beach. The resort sits on a jagged, rocky coast with a small sandy tanning area and an expansive pool. Fabulous beaches are just a short bike ride away.

To me, Blue Tulum is actually a small, sexy all-inclusive property with an excellent spa, attentive service, fine cuisine, and a wonderfully secluded seaside location right next to the Tulum Ruins. It’s gorgeous and exclusive, yet unpretentious in a way that’s kind of unique among resorts along the Yucatan.

Right now, you can take advantage of 20% savings on your next Blue Tulum escape. Nightly rates start at just $185 per-person for resort stays in May and June, and go lower for July and August. And remember, that’s all-inclusive!

Savings are only available online, though, so click here for reservations.

Deal of the Week: 4-for-1 Savings at Long Bay Beach Resort, Tortola

Courtesy Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas

The first time I went to Long Bay was back in 1989 for my high school senior class trip. It may have been a nice resort back then, but I wouldn’t know it. You see, my class had a bit of a reputation for partying, and we hit Tortola like we were being paid to prove it.

Unlike my brother, who claims a vivid recollection of the seminal smoke-filled Steel Pulse concert of his youth (yeah, right), I remember very little about that first trip to Long Bay. There are some in our group who insist to this day that I spent long hours drinking in the, ahem, “local culture” at Tortola’s famed Bomba Shack, but I am positive that to this day I’ve never set foot in the place.

Yeah, the party was that good.

So good, in fact, that my high school banned all future senior class trips after we got home (sorry class of ’90, 91, 92, etc.).

Luckily for me, I had a chance to visit Long Bay again just a few short years ago. The minute I arrived on property I thought the taxi driver had made a mistake. How could such a classy and elegant resort have hosted St. Croix’s version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Tasteful decor, rich mahogany furniture, private in-room Jacuzzis; this was not the den of iniquity of my youth.

I soon learned that the property had undergone a multi-million-dollar upgrade when it joined Elite Island Resorts’ Caribbean hotel collection back in 2004. Of course, the beach (the longest in the BVI’s), is still amazing, but the teenage party here is definitely over, replaced instead by the type of tropical luxury sought by today’s sophisticated travelers.

Like everyone else, sophisticated travelers like a great deal, and Long Bay just happens to be offering one of the best ones we’ve ever seen this summer. You think 2-for-1 is nice, try 4-for-1!

That’s right, Elite Island Resorts is inviting 4 vacationers to stay at Long Bay for the price of 1. The official name of the promo is Pay for 1 & Bring Up to 4, and it’s valid for resort stays between April 15 and August 30, 2010, when booked by July 15, 2010. A minimum 3-night stay is required, and all 4 guests must share the same accommodations, which is not a problem at Long Bay with its expansive villas.

Nightly rates start as low as $375 EP, plus taxes and service charges.

For reservations and more information, call (800) 345-0356.

St. Croix Country Day Class of ’89, can you say class reunion? Maybe I’ll finally get to see what this whole Bomba Shack thing is all about!

Deal of the Week: Sultry Summer Offer from Nisbet Plantation

Courtesy Nisbet Plantation

There’s a lot to love about Nisbet Plantation in Nevis, especially for lovers. Don’t get me wrong – families can enjoy magical vacation experiences here too, but just look at this place. It doesn’t scream romance (that would be too bourgeois) so much as it whispers it, gently; a soft kiss sure to follow.

Classic properties like this are a real treat to me. Service and pampering here are born of an established tradition enjoyed by the traveling elite for generations. At the same time, all the modern amenities found at today’s newest resorts are readily available. Two of my favorites at Nisbet: free Wifi (not as widely available at Caribbean resorts as you might think) and complimentary use of a Flip digital video camera to capture vacation memories. Nice.

For summer 2010, you can save on all the niceness at Nisbet Plantation by taking advantage of the resort’s Sultry Summer promo, which rewards guests with a free night on stays of 5 nights or more. Eligible resort stays must take place between May 1 and August 8, 2010.

As an added bonus, couples staying 7 nights or more will receive free transfers from the airports in Nevis (NEV) or St. Kitts (SKB). Guests arriving in St. Kitts will be greeted at the airport and transported to a private water taxi for the short boat ride to Nevis. Couples staying 6 nights or less receive 50% off airport transfers.

The Sultry Summer offer is available in all room categories, including the Premier rooms overlooking the ocean. Daily rates, which include full breakfast served ocean side, afternoon tea and 3-course dinner in the AAA Four Diamond-rated Great House, begin at $365 for a Superior Room based on double occupancy.

For reservations, call Nisbet Plantation toll-free at 1-800-742-6008.

See you there!

Deal of the Week: St. Croix Villa Escape – Exclusive!

Master Bedroom at St. Croix Oasis

Nothing is more home away from home than a stay in your own private villa. Sure, you have to do the dishes (most of the time), but it’s a small price to pay for all that freedom and privacy (i.e.: no worries over wafer-thin walls).

Today we’ve got an exclusive offer to one such wonderful villa, St. Croix Oasis, located back on our home island of St. Croix.

This charming 1-bedroom/1-bath villa on the island’s East End comfortably sleeps 4, and is conveniently located just 5-10 minutes east of downtown Christiansted. There’s a full-size kitchen with modern appliances, a breakfast bar, a/c, cable TV, stereo system, large bedroom (pictured above), and spacious living/dinning room. An on-site pool is shared with other villas in the area.

Shoy’s Beach, an all-time favorite of mine, is one a few beach options just minutes away. You can even walk from St. Croix Oasis to Cheeseburgers in Paradise, a favorite local hangout with some of the best burgers anywhere.

But let’s get back to the deal. As I mentioned above, it’s an exclusive, which means you can only get the goods right here. Check it out…

For villa stays between May 1 and October 31, 2010, Uncommon Caribbean readers can take advantage of a per night rate of just $65. A minimum stay of 5 nights is required. The rate includes hotel taxes, as well as a cleaning fee, and is due 15 days prior to arrival. A fully-refundable security deposit of $100 is also required to reserve the villa.

How good a deal is this? Well, the normal 1-week rate for the same May to October period is $625. As loyal Uncommon Caribbean readers, you’ll pay just $455. Yeah, you’re welcome!

For bookings, click here and be sure to type in Uncommon Caribbean in the “Additional info request” box.

See you in St. Croix!

Deal of the Week: Spring Savings at Hotel Bakoua, Martinique

Patrick Bennett

When it comes to hotels with colonial West Indian charm, it’s hard to beat Hotel Bakoua in Martinique. After all, the property’s main structure was originally built as a colonial estate. Now part of Sofitel’s MGallery collection, the 139-room Bakoua retains an authentic, East India Company style, with vast open spaces, rattan and precious wood furnishings, and a lush tropical garden that leads to a seascape of endless skies above the Bay of Fort-de-France.

One of our favorite things about Bakoua is its lobby bar, which ranks high on our list of the most picturesque places to enjoy a cocktail in the Caribbean. The bar area fronts a small, yet alluring infinity pool, which seemingly drops right into the Bay. Night views of Fort-de-France and the Carbet peaks to the north are truly breathtaking.

Of course, Bakoua’s other bar (pictured above) is pretty cool too.

With two such unique watering holes, it’s little wonder, then, that Hotel Bakoua is such a popular location for TV and film productions, as well as fashion photo shoots.

For spring 2010, Hotel Bakoua has teamed up with the travel pros at Vacation Travel Mart to offer $200 savings on five-night minimum air+hotel packages for travel between May 5 and June 30. For example, a six-day/five-night package including round-trip air transportation from Miami starts at $1,269 per-person based on double occupancy. That’s just a hair over $200-a-day and airfare is included!

Eligible bookings must be made by April 9, 2010.

For reservations and more information, click here or call 1-800-288-1435.

Deal of the Week: Save 40% Off Summer Luxe at The House, Barbados

Open air lounge at The House, Barbados

Open air lounge at The House by Patrick Bennett

I just checked in at The House here in Barbados , and, put simply, this place is fantastic. From the moment I strolled onto the property, I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying the height of hospitality with a distinctly Bajan, laid-back elegance. The property is a beauty of contrasts with white washed walls, crisp white uniforms and immaculately clean white furnishings playing off dark mahogany colored floors and blue accents on collars, umbrellas and picture frames. Small, intimate and brimming with a boutique style that would leave most Miami Beach establishments green with envy, The House is a superb place to while away your Barbados days in the lap of luxury and extremely capable hands.

So, what comes next? Well it’s time for complimentary tea, then I expect to take advantage of my jet-lag massage, which by the way is included in the price of the room. Then I imagine I’ll have a delicious dinner at one of the best restaurants on Barbados: Daphne’s, which also happens to be adjacent to the property. Then? Well, after a libation or two in the open air bar, I’ll retire to my expertly appointed suite with separate living room, 2 baths and 2 balconies overlooking the Caribbean sea.

But before I start taking advantage of all the goodness The House has to offer, I thought I’d share news of a new sale to help you “Take it to The House” this summer. Here’s the deal:

* Savings: 40% off
* Booking Period: March 16 to April 30, 2010
* Travel Period: May 16 to September 30, 2010

With the 40% savings, rates start as low as $398 per-room, per night for a nice garden view junior suite based on single or double occupancy. Rates are valid on stays of three nights or more, subject to space availability, and include the amenities I already bragged about above, as well as taxes and service charges. Bottom line: deals like this don’t hang around forever, so you’ll want to move fast to get in on the savings.

For reservations and more information, visit www.eleganthotels.com, or call 1-888-996-9948, or from the UK 0-800-917-3534.

I’m off for “tea.” cheerio!
