Taste of the Caribbean: Barbados’ Other Best Spot for Lobster

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Remember last week when we told you about the very best place to enjoy lobster in Barbados? As I noted in the story, Lobster Alive holds the title IMO because the spiny guys served there are the freshest you can find anywhere in Barbados. For most lobster-lovers, that distinction alone provides more than enough reason not to stray anywhere else, despite the rustic beach shack motif that gives Lobster Alive part of its charm.
But let’s say you’re in Barbados with your in-laws…who want you out. Maybe it’s your first business trip with a difficult new boss or client. Either way, if it’s important to you that the restaurant itself make as lofty an impression as the fare it serves up, then the Fish Pot is the place to go.

Taste of the Caribbean: Barbados’ Best Spot for Lobster

Lobster Alive Lunch, Barbados by Patrick Bennett

There are several nice advantages to life in Barbados born of the island’s unique geographic position a good 100 miles further east into the Atlantic than the rest of its Caribbean neighbors. World-class surfing conditions and amazing seaside natural wonders artfully carved by the ever-pounding Atlantic are two of my favorites. Of course, where there are pluses, there are also minuses, and for lovers of shellfish Barbados has a big one: no lobster.
Okay, I shouldn’t say “no lobster” as there’s bound to be at least a small number hanging around the coral reefs that ring the island. There’s also this rare creature some consider to be a lobster, but really it’s not.

On-Site Grand Cayman: Where to Go for the Best Weekend Fish Fry

Grapetree Cafe in Bodden Town, Grand Cayman/SBPR

The Grape Tree Cafe in Grand Cayman combines two quintessentially Caribbean past times near and dear to my heart: hanging out at gas stations and eating fried fish.
The gas station part goes back to my youth in St. Croix, when I used to spend hours each weekend with friends at the Texaco station near the Sunny Isles shopping plaza. On an island as beautiful as St. Croix, offering so many wonderfully scenic places to lime, you might find it odd that we’d choose a gas station with a “view” of the highway as a prime spot for weekend fun. Like most teens, though, we were always strapped for cash, so the station’s $1 Heinekens always kept us coming back for more.

On-Site Grand Cayman: Eating Turtle is Good… For The Turtles?

Turtle Stew with rice & beans/SBPR

I didn’t need much prodding to try a plate of Turtle Stew during my first trip to Grand Cayman this past weekend. I’d known for some time that the cute, majestic and perpetually endangered creatures were a delicacy here, so in keeping with our uncommon travel tendencies, I was anxious to get a taste. I’d read before I arrived that all turtle meat served legally on the island emanated from the Cayman Turtle Farm, so I figured I’d start my culinary quest there. You know, where the meat is the freshest.
Now, bear in mind, the Cayman Turtle Farm is not your typical uncommon attraction.

Things to do in Aruba When it Rains

Rain, rain, it's okay if you stay/SBPR

Aruba is famous for its endless days of sunshine, clear-blue skies and arid desert landscape. It’s the one place in the Caribbean where vacationers are virtually guaranteed to avoid rain (average annual rainfall is less than 20 inches). The weather here is so consistently good, in fact, that I’ve heard the local newspapers hardly ever bother to publish a forecast. It just NEVER rains in Aruba… period.
Err, correction: it never rains in Aruba unless I’m there.
I’ve made two trips to Aruba over the past five years… It rained both times. At least on the first trip five years ago it only rained at night.

Taste of the Caribbean: Local Lobster—No Claws, No Problem!

Caribbean Lobster 4

It would be too easy to be drawn into the debate about what’s the tastiest lobster. Naturally, most anyone from the northern half of the United States would quickly reply (in all caps): MAINE LOBSTER! They would probably add that it’s the only “true” lobster, whatever that means. And just as naturally, most anyone from the Caribbean would loudly retort: CARIBBEAN LOBSTER IS ‘DE BEST!
Rather than stoke the fires of that debate (I think you can guess my allegiance), I’ll just say there are two things that factor into the tastiness of a dish that go beyond the usual debate.

On-Site St. Lucia: Start the Day Right in Anse La Raye

Walking Anse La Raye by Kathleen Bennett

From the Anse La Raye site:

The real St Lucia is never too hard to find, especially for those willing to venture into the island’s smaller coastal fishing villages. Festooned with charming wooden houses, and with colourful fishing boats moored at the waterfront Anse la Raye on St Lucia’s scenic west coast is one such village.

I couldn’t agree more. This is a charming time capsule of a village worth spending some time in. Perhaps the best time to visit is on Friday night as each week the waterfront comes alive with the Anse La Raye Fish Friday (get it?). Yeah, a Friday night of fresh, fried fish and grilled Caribbean lobster (my favorite!!!
