Friday Happy Hour: Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum Literally Offers Sex in a Bottle

spiced2

Chairman’s Reserve may be the #1 Rum for Young St. Lucians, as my brother asserted earlier, but if those young St. Lucians are in the mood for some lovin’, then you’re more likely to find them sipping this spicy new blend.
Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum is h-o-t-t, HOT. Real hot, and sexy too. It’s a notion underscored quite emphatically by the blood-red lettering of the word “Spiced” within an equally red box right on the front of the bottle.
The presentation comes across almost like a warning label – something you might see at the side of a box of some pain reliever advising against over-dosing, side-effects and other assorted dangers.

Friday Happy Hour: Mount Gay Eclipse Silver

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The 2011 Miami Rum Renaissance Festival has been in full swing the past few days here in South Florida, so you’d think I’d be awash in the type of good vibes and revelry that comes with sampling 118 different types of my favorite spirit hailing from all parts of the globe.
Sadly, you’d be wrong.
I’ve met with such the collection of roadblocks, miscommunications and dumb luck this week that I almost feel like there’s some strange, unseen evil force trying to keep me away from all the rum fun. I haven’t so much as sniffed a single one of the VIP parties hosted by rum royalty, the likes of Zafra, Brugal, and yes, even Bacardi.

Taste of the Caribbean: Sea Moss, the Caribbean’s Potent Sex Potion

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Valentine’s Day: it’s the one day women don’t mind the one thing that’s always on men’s minds. Sure, you’ve got to come with the flowers, the chocolates, champagne and other such bribes, err…gifts, but at the end of the day, if you’ve got somebody special in your life today, it’s a good bet you’re gonna’ get some tonight.
Being that it’s the sexiest region in the world, the Caribbean is naturally rife with a wide range of love potions, aphrodisiacs and natural, *ahem*, enhancers. Topping the list for many men across the region is a thick and milky creation called Sea Moss.

Friday Happy Hour: Strong Back, The Manly Stout Made Just for Girls

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I encountered many great surprises during a brief three-day visit to Grand Bahama Island earlier this year. Hanging out at Billy Joe’s was definitely a treat, and I’ll never forget the Wednesday Night Fish Fry at Smith’s Point (the best midweek party in the Caribbean, IMHO), but probably the biggest surprise to me was this little island’s nice selection of beers.
You see, I’ve come to know many of the Caribbean brews over my regular travels throughout the region, but had never known that any were produced in Grand Bahama, much less four different ones.  All four – Sands, Sands Light, High Rock and Strong Back – are brewed and bottled by the Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Company, which started production in 2005.

On-Site Aruba: One Man’s Trash is Always a Treasure at Charlie’s Bar

When you think oil and the Caribbean you mostly envision glistening beach bodies slathered in the sweet-smelling tanning potions purveyed by the likes of Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic and others. Less known, however, is the region’s long association with the other, darker and infinitely more valuable oil – Texas T, Black Gold – so essential to our modern daily lives.
Some of the largest oil refineries in the world can be found on a collection of small islands throughout the Caribbean, most dating back to the 1940′s and 50′s. The advent of these refineries has, over the years, spawned a unique sub-culture of oil men and women (mostly men), attracted to the region from such disparate lands as the Middle East, Russia, South America, the U.S.

On-Site Nevis: Crossing Paths with Naked Boy Again

Hard Wine lives up to its name!/SBPR

I know we usually reserve the booze discourse for our Friday Happy Hour series, but yesterday’s Facebook discussion over the correct spelling of wining (or whining as the case may be) reminded me of this stuff. I found it in a gas station during our Nevis adventure earlier this year. Befitting its suggestive name and label, the bottle was perched high on a shelf behind the check-out counter. Of course, I just had to check it out.
From the minute I asked the cashier for it, our cab driver started shaking his head. “You don’t want to mess with that stuff; too potent,” he laughed.

My Close Encounter with Tobago’s Elusive Naked Boy

notna via flickr

Okay, let me begin by saying it’s not what you think. This is not an X-rated account of a sordid, off-the-beaten-path Caribbean adventure gone wrong. Nor did I switch teams on my last trip to Tobago - not that there’s anything wrong with that.
No, this is a somewhat innocent and certainly instructional tale that illustrates how a little curiosity and openness can go a long way toward enhancing your travel experiences, and maybe even the rest of your life.
Our story begins, not surprisingly, at a bar. Specifically, the Khambi Jungle Pub pictured below, which sits on the side of the long and windy road between Scarborough and Speyside in Tobago.
