Tuesday 2 Cents: Kathryn Bertine Tells us Why Nevis is a Cyclist’s Paradise

Kathryn Bertine

Nevis has always been known as an exclusive destination for luxury pampering, rest and relaxation, but we found during our visit there last month that it’s also a great choice for active travelers. After all, you’ve got Mt. Nevis with its lush rainforest and unique trails, so it’s no surprise that hiking is big here. What is surprising, though, is the strong popularity of another sport that on the surface may seem ill-suited to such a small island – cycling.
Why is cycling an odd fit for Nevis? Well, Nevis is tiny – 36 square miles – and basically has only one main road that encircles the island.

Another Option for Auto Racing Action Under the Warm Caribbean Sun

VK-Sportsman (Vivek Maharaj) via flickr

Recently, I wrote here about my surprise at learning of a professional rally race in Jamaica and my desire to head back to JA to check it out. Well, now it seems I’ll have to expand my travel plans as I just heard there’s another Caribbean destination where I can get my auto racing fix – Trinidad & Tobago.
The Trinidad & Tobago Rally Club actually puts on a Championship Series each year, with 7 races contested between February and October. Their biggest race, Rally Trinidad, is held in March and attracts an international field of drivers from Barbados, St.

Rally Jamaica, My Latest Excuse to Race ‘Back a Yard’

Dameonrb via flickr

As Patrick alluded to earlier this week while waxing poetic about his favorite Ting, I love traveling to Jamaica. Lucky for me, my day job takes me there a few times a year. Still, I’m always on the look-out for new excuses to head back more often. The latest - Rally Jamaica.
Growing up in St. Croix, I had always been aware of the Caribbean’s unique “car culture” and its extension into drag racing (we’ll get to that another day). However, I never knew that organized rally racing existed in the region ’til my last visit to Montego Bay earlier this year.

Saturday Video: Remembering the Reggae Boyz’ Historic World Cup Run

ReggaeBoyz

With World Cup fever now in full swing across the Caribbean (and virtually everywhere else) we’re taking a look back and saluting Jamaica’s football heroes, The Reggae Boyz. Who could forget back in 1998 when Jamaica became the first English speaking country from the Caribbean to ever qualify for the World Cup Finals, a feat many in the region thought would never happen. Making the tournament was historic, but when they won their 3rd game 2-1 vs Japan the Reggae Boyz became legends. Remember when by enjoying the video above, which showcases some of Jamaica’s biggest recording artists – Ziggy Marley, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, among them – performing the Reggae Boyz theme song from 1998, Rise Up!

Bozo Beach, Cabarete Preps for Kiteboarding World Cup

air

Of all the extreme sports contested at sea, nothing takes my breath away quite like kiteboarding. The amount of air these guys (and girls) get, and the rapid rate at which they get it, is truly amazing. Scary amazing, really.
Watching the handful of brave and talented amateurs who give it a try here on Fort Lauderdale beach each week is so thrilling that so I can hardly imagine what it must be like to see the pros go at it.
If you happen to be in the Dominican Republic later this month, however, you can do just that.
The Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) will hold its 2010 World Cup in the small seaside village of Cabarete, located about 20 minutes from the Puerto Plata airport on the DR’s northern coast.

Saturday Video: Fuel-up for World Cup Soccer with Malta India

Malta

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup now just 4 short weeks away, here’s an old ad from Malta India de Puerto Rico to further build excitement for the world’s greatest sporting tournament. We in the Caribbean may not have Trinidad’s Soca Warriors or Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz to cheer for this year, but there’s no doubt the whole region will be watching and reveling in the goings-on in South Africa June 11 to July 11.

On-Site Tobago: The Churchill Downs of Goat Racing

Steve Bennett

It would be quite easy upon visiting Tobago to surmise that little here is taken very seriously. The entire place seems geared around having a good time, which was all well and good for me when last I visited in March.
That summation, however, would be fasle, and the photo above is proof.
You’re looking at the new state-of-the-art racing facility located in the small town of Buccoo, on Tobago’s Leeward Coast. That racing would be taken seriously to the tune of $100 million (the facility’s cost of construction) somewhere in the Caribbean is not altogether unusual. Horse racing, sailing regattas, triathlons and other tests of speed and endurance are contested throughout the region each year.
