Saturday Video: Dog Sledding in Jamaica? Believe it!

Dogs

Jamaica surely leads the Caribbean in “uncommon” sporting pursuits (and common ones for that matter; see Usain Bolt, world’s fastest man). Everyone knows about the country’s bobsled team, whose improbable run to the 1988 Winter Olympics was immortalized in the John Candy “classic”, Cool Runnings, but did you know that Jamaica is also the first Caribbean nation to field an entrant in the Iditarod?
You know the Iditarod, the 1,100-mile test of strength, endurance and sanity through the frigid and desolate wilds of the Alaskan Arctic… It’s about the last place you’d think to find someone from the Caribbean (you’ll NEVER find me there), but Jamaican Newton Marshall completed the race earlier this year.

Saturday Video: Kadooment is Coming!

Kadoonment

As we’ve mentioned before, it’s Carnival time just about anytime somewhere in the Caribbean. Right now, the party’s in Barbados where the annual Crop Over Festival is in full swing. We plan to run a comprehensive post on the fete in a few days, but for now, we hope you’ll enjoy this video showcasing the event’s grand finale, Kadooment.
If you like what you see and want to get in on this year’s festivities, fear not: Kadooment is always held on the first Monday in August (this year it’s August 2nd), so there’s still time to grab your feathers, your flask and your flag, and get down there!

Saturday Video: Drink More Ting!

Ting

In honor of Patrick’s deep love for Ting, we’re jammin’ to this catchy commercial today, and running out to our favorite Caribbean grocery here in South Florida to pick up a bottle or two. We’ll be enjoying a nice Ting ‘n Sting by the afternoon! Here’s hoping that Ting is available in your neck of the woods so you can join us…
Cheers!

Saturday Video: For a Unique July 4th Celebration, Try St. John Carnival

STJ

It’s seemingly always Carnival time somewhere in the Caribbean, and the 4th of July is no exception. The prime Caribbean party spot for this important U.S. holiday: tiny St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Trust me, I know from experience.
Taking the Seaplane from St. Croix over to Cruz Bay for St. John Carnival with just a cooler of beer for luggage, no hotel reservations and very few inhibitions is one of my favorite memories of growing up in the Virgin Islands. Based on the video above from last year’s bacchanal, the good vibes surrounding the event just keep getting better.

MangoMojito

So yeah, I’m feelin’ kinda’ bad about being so late with Friday Happy Hour yesterday. To help make up for it, here’s a quick video lesson from our friends at Cruzan Rum on how to make a Mango Mojito. After all, it is mango season, right?
Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Saturday Video: Remembering the Reggae Boyz’ Historic World Cup Run

ReggaeBoyz

With World Cup fever now in full swing across the Caribbean (and virtually everywhere else) we’re taking a look back and saluting Jamaica’s football heroes, The Reggae Boyz. Who could forget back in 1998 when Jamaica became the first English speaking country from the Caribbean to ever qualify for the World Cup Finals, a feat many in the region thought would never happen. Making the tournament was historic, but when they won their 3rd game 2-1 vs Japan the Reggae Boyz became legends. Remember when by enjoying the video above, which showcases some of Jamaica’s biggest recording artists – Ziggy Marley, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, among them – performing the Reggae Boyz theme song from 1998, Rise Up!

Saturday Video: Celebrating C’sted’s 275th B’day with The Fat Boys

FatBoys

Christiansted, the charming principal town on my home island of St. Croix, is celebrating its 275th anniversary in 2010. Many notable and historic events have occurred here over the centuries, but we’re choosing to mark the momentous milestone by remembering the town’s uncommon star turn in a 1980′s rap video.
In the mid-80′s there was hardly a bigger rap group, both literally and figuratively, than The Fat Boys. With 3 Gold albums (’84, ’85, ’88) and 1 Platinum release (’87), this Brooklyn trio was on top of the music world. It was pretty surprising to me, then, as a young teen growing up in St.
