Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: English Harbour, Antigua

English Harbour, Antigua

What’s the value of a week? A day? A moment?
Ever find yourself asking these questions when you’re knee deep in some boring or unpleasant or just somehow “not you” task? I do. All the time.
I could be sitting in a meeting about some irksome work issue that for one seemingly never-ending moment occupies an immense portion of a room full of people’s minds. Sometimes it’s when I’m riding the subway to work — toiling away unsuccessfully at Angry Birds while a nearby fellow straphanger infiltrates the furthest reaches of his nostrils looking for who-knows-what. Ever think about how much time we spend doing things we “have to”?

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Cuba, Castro, Orchids & The Dangers of Wanting Too Much

Cuba Orchids

Sometimes it’s possible to want something too much.
This was definitely the case when I was planning my next Uncommon Caribbean adventure. I had it in my mind that I’d finally visit Cuba and spend time in Havana, Trinidad, and climbing the three highest peaks on the island. This was inspired by a trip offered through KE Adventures — a company I’d used a few years ago to climb mountains in Morocco. The itinerary looked perfect. Hiking! Camping! Jungle! Beach! With excitement in my voice, I gave them a call. All was going well… Until I mentioned that a 6 month old infant would be one of my proposed adventurers.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Sailboats off Martinique

Sailboats off Martinique

“It’s not far down to paradise; At least it’s not for me”
If you’re of a certain age and especially if you’ve grown up in the Caribbean, it’s likely you’ve heard (and depending on your tastes, been driven crazy by) those opening lines to Christopher Cross’ legendary hit: “Sailing.” Off his Grammy award winning, eponymous debut album from 1979, “Sailing” went on to be a number-one single, Song of the Year, Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. I’m not kidding. That album even beat Pink Floyd‘s The Wall for that year’s Grammy!
Now, I’ve never been sailing for more than a quick trip to Buck Island, but that’s all about to change.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Cruz Bay, St. John

Cruz Bay, St. John

Where do you go to vacation in paradise… when you live in paradise?
Whenever I meet someone new during my self-imposed exile in New York City, and the subject of where I’m from comes up, I always get the same question: “How could you leave paradise and move here!?” Well, the funny thing about being born and raised on an island paradise is that you don’t really ever think of it as such. Back in the 80′s St. Croix did pull some tourists from the states, so I did know that people from far and wide wanted to visit my home, but I never really thought of it as a vacation spot myself.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Buck Island, St. Croix

St-Croix---Buck-Island

When it comes to traveling to St. Croix, I can think of many, many reasons to make the trip. We’ve talked about some of them right here on Uncommon Caribbean. There’s the easternmost point of the United States at Point Udall, St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the beer drinking pigs, the favorite rum of Steve and I: Cruzan Rum, the excellent food to be had every year at the St. Croix Food and Wine Experience, the excellent food to be had year round at restaurants like Salud! and, of course, our own resident mixologist, Jesse Card.
But for me, and I’m sure Steve would agree, the real reason we visit St.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Saint-Pierre, Martinique

Martinique, St. Pierre

Imagine that beautifully serene bay as a boiling cauldron of death. It’s hard to believe, but that was the case during the 1902 eruption of Mt. Peleé on the island of Martinique. Hot magma rising from the earth’s core and a pyroclastic flow speeding down from the mountain left nowhere to run. It was a tremendous tragedy costing the lives of over 30,000 residents in under 2 minutes. Steve previously told the story, so I won’t go into details, but the reason I bring it up is not to talk about death and destruction, but rather rebirth and hope.
I know it seems hokey.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: Anse La Raye Bay, St. Lucia

Anse La Raye Bay, St. Lucia

When we were last in St. Lucia, specifically to see Steel Pulse play the 19th Annual St. Lucia Jazz Festival, one of our favorite destinations on the island was Anse La Raye. This picturesque little fishing village on the west coast is all you could want in an authentically West Indian experience. There are the tiny, brightly colored fishing boats bobbing about in the bay, excellent fry fish and bake to be had, and the people are more than happy to welcome you to join them in watching a little cricket match on the sidewalk. Beyond all that, it also boasts one of the best weekly parties on-island with their fish fry every Friday night.
