Surfing Saint Barth

St. Barts is known for offering visitors a wealth of travel treasures the likes of which the majority of us will never know.

Of all the shiny shores throughout the Caribbean, it’s arguable that the ones you’ll find here are the most exclusive. Celebrity sightings are about as common as palm trees everywhere else in the region. Shopping caters strongly toward those carrying platinum cards and the type of cell phones you won’t find at Best Buy. Hotel options are mostly super-chic, luxurious and small – new properties can be no larger than 12 rooms, giving hoteliers an open invitation to charge a hefty premium.

Still, there are ways to enjoy St. Barts on the cheap. We’ll explore affordable options on places to stay and eat in the coming weeks. Today, our focus is one special thing you can do: surfing.

With its tiny size and tony reputation, St. Barts might seem an odd place to include on the ultimate surfing odyssey of the Caribbean, but as you can see in the video above, the waves here are definitely worth the visit. It’s not Soup Bowl, of course, but the swells look similar in size to the ones I tried to tame in Tobago last year.

There are 17 total beaches in St. Barts, amazing for its size. I’ve read that the best for surfing are Toiny, Lorient, Anse des Cayes and Saint-Jean. Here’s hoping we get the chance to check for ourselves soon…
