Ask Uncommon Caribbean: How Can I Get a Lifeguard Job on Magens Bay, St. Thomas?

Could there be a better office than this?

With all its popularity, jaw-dropping beauty, and some pretty wild co-workers, you might think it near-impossible to land a job lifeguarding at Magens Bay in St. Thomas. I mean, who wouldn’t want to work here?

While walking the beach snapping pics like this one of the iconic dark green lifeguard stands, I imagined the line of applicants for jobs here being several miles longer than the beach itself.

Actually, we always need part-time lifeguards, especially during the season.

So says Hubert Brumant, General Manager of the Magens Bay Authority, the semi-autonomous body that manages the entire 68-acre park.

Peak season runs from November to May, a time when the beach is always more crowded. Lifeguards here, who work in two shifts (either 8am–5pm, or 9am–6pm), earn $12.50 per-hour, in addition, of course, to all this marvelous sun, sand, and sea.

To qualify, lifeguards must be open water certified – CPR, AED, First Aid – and provide references. The Magens Bay Authority provides training on the special nuances of working here.

To apply, give Hubert a call at Tel: 340-777-6300, or shoot him an email at magensbay@viaccess.net.

Buck Island, St. Thomas

There's another Buck Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The St. Thomas version, though, is not much like the Buck Island we grew up knowing in St. Croix.

Hassel Island, St. Thomas Near Sunset

Once connected to mainland St. Thomas, the former peninsula/pirate hideout that is Hassel Island remains a beautiful centerpiece of Charlotte Amalie.
