Martinique Takes Its Turn As The New Surfing Capital Of The Caribbean

If you lived in the Caribbean during my childhood years in St. Croix, then you knew Puerto Rico as the region’s top surf spot. In later years, Barbados rose to prominence, thanks in large part to Kelly Slater’s affinity for Soup Bowl.

In recent years, though, Martinique has stolen the surfing spotlight in the Caribbean.

Martinique Surf Pro is a big reason why.

The only World Surf League (WSL) Qualification Series event to be held in the Caribbean in 2017, Martinique Surf Pro has attracted a who’s who of top competitive surfers from around the world to the small and charming seaside village of Basse-Pointe for each of the past three years.

The event organizers could’ve hardly picked a better spot.

Before the advent of Martinique Surf Pro, Basse-Pointe was under the surf radar; a “secret” spot cherished among locals and visitors “in-the-know” for its consistent, powerful, and especially long waves that break right over an exposed reef break.

The secret is most definitely out now. (That will happen when more than 100 world-class surfers from the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean descend upon your shores every late-spring). You’re still not apt to find the breaks overly crowded here if you decide to give Basse-Pointe a try, though.

Visiting simply to take in the Martinique Surf Pro action promises to be plenty fun too, of course…

The 2017 edition of Martinique Surf Pro goes down April 1 to 8. At last check, Norwegian Air had nonstop flights departing from New York (JFK) to Martinique pricing at $99 one way, so it’s not too late to get down there and enjoy the hottest surf competition anywhere in the Caribbean!
