Gingerbread Hotel, Bequia: Uncommon Envy
Guest accommodations we’ve come to know in Bequia range from the sublime (Sugar Reef) to the ridiculous (Moonhole). Splitting the difference, or so I should think: the Gingerbread Hotel.
Set along the sea in the heart of the Belmont Walkway in Port Elizabeth, the Gingerbread Hotel exudes traditional old West Indian charm in her colonial gingerbread architecture and bright colors. I had the place pegged as part of some 19th century aristocrat’s stately manor when I first set eyes on the place a few years ago.
Wrong.
The “old world” charm here actually only dates back to 1998.
Still, Gingerbread pulls off the heirloom look beautifully from the exterior.
Images I’ve seen of the inside suggest the old school theme also permeates throughout the guestrooms and common areas. Large terraces adorned with hand-carved gingerbread trim, four-poster beds with wispy mosquito netting, sisal rugs over terra cotta tiled floors, vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams – there looks to be charm in every corner of the Gingerbread Hotel.
It would be hard to pull me away from Sugar Reef if I’m ever lucky enough to visit Bequia again, but if I had to try something new the Gingerbread would be next on my list.
