What’s Old is Amazing in Pusser’s Rum Gunpowder Proof

I said well Daddy don’t you know that things go in cycles
Way that Bobby Brown is just amping like Michael…

These classic Tribe lyrics may seem played to some, but the sentiment still applies to most things in life… Yes, even to rum, where tinkering and hubris can sometimes result in an old favorite blend “evolving” into something altogether different.

The fix: create something “new” that’s actually a reboot of the tried and true favorite you started out with way back at the beginning.

Pusser’s new Gunpowder Proof Rum is just such a spirit.

Unlike the Admiralty Blend (Blue Label) Pusser’s most of us know, which is merely inspired by the recipe for the rum rationed each day to sailors in the British Royal Navy from 1655 to 1970, the Gunpowder Proof Pusser’s is, according to the Pusser’s website,

a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength and in accordance with the Admiralty’s blending recipe

In other words, it’s supposed to be the real deal in terms of flavor and potency.

So, how were those old British sailors living? Was their rum any good?

Well, if Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof is as true to its historical roots as they say, I imagine those old sailors were living pretty good… and dangerously.

On the nose, big, bold aromas of spicy oak and molasses smack you to attention – ten-hut!!

On the lips, boom! Prepare for a stinging punch of 109-proof alcohol, those spicy oak and molasses notes further peppering your taste buds right up front.

Never fear, though. A surprisingly smooth and soothingly caress of vanilla, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger draw out through the finish, the rich, robust flavor lingering long and like a warm embrace you won’t want to end.

I enjoyed my first taste of Pusser’s Gunpowder at the 2016 Miami Rum Renaissance Festival back in April, which served as a bit of a coming out party in the U.S. for the new old favorite. If you don’t see if on the shelves of your local liquor store just yet, start clamoring for it!

Cheers!
