Lockdown Rum Cocktail Recipe – A Simple Drink For Challenging Times
Week #3 of at-home confinement due to COVID-19 looms on the horizon here in South Florida. In my house that means that sh!t’s about to get real. The wife and I have been working throughout, of course. Said work, though, has come with more than its fair share of distractions, COVID-19 news induced and otherwise. Everything changes when our teenage boys start virtual high school come Monday. Personally, I’m not looking forward to adding the stress of school to the anxiety we’re already feeling over COVID-19 and the health and well-being of our extended family in the Caribbean, Pennsylvania, New York, and elsewhere. It’s way past time for a drink expressly made for these challenging times. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Lockdown Rum Cocktail.
I just birthed this baby over lunch today in anticipation of our Friday Happy Hour live stream over on Instagram at 5pm today. The list of ingredients in line with my personal preference, but also with a nod to the times. After all, we all need to be limiting our trips to the grocery/liquor store right about now, right…?
- 2oz Rum
- 2oz Whatever Juice You’ve Got
- Splash of Any Kind of Fizzy Water
- Dash of Angostura Bitters (optional)
Social distancing guidelines are also echoed in the flexible nature of the Lockdown Rum Cocktail. Ingredient choices are a luxury for a lot of us these days. When you’re on lockdown, you make do with what you’ve got and make it work for you.
Here’s how the Lockdown Rum Cocktail is working for me today…
Method
Mix rum and juice (I used pink grapefruit) in whatever drinking glass makes you happiest. The fancy one above was a favorite of my parents that I recall from my childhood days in St. Croix. Lord knows that these days I gain extra comfort remembering those simpler times…
Back to the cocktail, add a splash of any kind of fizzy water to your rum and juice mix. I opted for the carbonated water from my SodaStream, but any fizzy water will do. Reason: Bubbles bring smiles and make everything seem brighter; also much-needed these days…
Now, you could stop right here and be okay. For me, though, a dash or two Angostura Bitters makes everything better. Dash away if you’ve got a bottle handy and enjoy as best you can secure in the knowledge that this too shall pass…
Cheers!
