Little Cayman Pier at Point of Sand Beach by Patrick Bennett

Wet with Wildlife on Little Cayman: Photo of the Day

I take a lot of photos on our trips. It’s not uncommon for me to return with thousands and thousands of them. In the heat of the moment, something catches my eye, I try my best to frame it up and capture not just the action, but also the feeling of what it’s like to be at that exact place and time.

But sometimes something doesn’t go as planned. It’s usually because very little we do is planned. Moments just happen. So, as much as I’m trying to capture the moment, I’m also trying to live in the moment.

Such was the case with this photo.

After driving all over the island, I was overjoyed to have found Point of Sand Beach — a perfect white sand beach on Little Cayman; an island known more for ironshore than sand of almost any kind. I had been happily splashing around in the immaculately clear waters. Chasing fish here and there with my GoPro, I was like a kid in a candy store.

Then I noticed the pier, and the bird, and my wife.

Soggy POV at Point of Sand Beach

I immediately swam over, popped out of the water, and began to snap away. I almost never take photos with the GoPro, but as they say, the “best camera is the one you have with you.” It may have still been covered in water, but despite the imperfections, I kinda like this photo.

This is what it felt like. Wet. Bright sunlight reflecting off the bleached pier extending out from Point of Sand Beach. Impossibly blue. And in the middle of it all, this little scene of a woman and her brown booby.

If you’re thinking of paying Little Cayman a visit for the world class SCUBA diving or any other reason, consider checking out Paradise Villas for you home base.
