The Most Dangerous Cocktail In The Bahamas

This Is The Most Dangerous Cocktail In The Bahamas

Due to the destruction brought on by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019, Deep Water Cay has ceased operations. As the property recovers in hopes of reopening, a fundraising drive has been launched to aid resort staff in rebuilding their lives. Should you wish to contribute, please visit the Deep Water Cay website.

I’ve survived enjoyed more than my fair share of particularly potent cocktails on my travels to and through The Bahamas. Before checking into Deep Water Cay last week, I’d probably have to say that Ivan’s “Special” Rum Punch at Bu’s Bar on Cat Cay caused me the most damage, with the original Goombay Smash, only available at Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar, coming in a close second.

The tempestuous tipple pictured above, though, tops them both. It’s called the Deep Water Iced Tea, and believe me, you won’t want to get in too deep with this one.

The Most Dangerous Cocktail In The Bahamas

Like a traditional Long Island Iced Tea, this bad boy includes a broad mix of boozes – dark rum, vodka, and gin – all added in equal measure (one ounce each) to a tall glass loaded with ice. A splash or two of fresh squeezed lemon juice brings the sour, while a topping of iced tea adds more sweet.

There’s no cola in this incendiary iced tea. The triple sec and tequila you’ll find in most Long Island Iced Teas is missing too, which makes this version a tad easier to take than the original.

Long days of fishing and fun under the sunny skies around Deep Water Cay, though, tend to give this dangerous cocktail a bit more of a kick than you might expect. It certainly put me to bed WAY earlier than usual last Friday… and has me anxious to return again soon for another taste.

Cheers!
