Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: The Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Mexico

The Caribbean Sea. One of the largest saltwater seas in the world, it has a surface area of around 1,063,000 square miles. Peppered along its borders to the North and East are the many unique islands we’ve been exploring our whole lives—most recently for you, our awesome readers, and this blog. But there’s more to the Caribbean than the Lesser and Greater Antilles, of course. There are thousands and thousands of miles of unbelievable coastline along Central and South America that touch our favorite sea, and although I personally haven’t traveled too many of those miles, they shouldn’t be overlooked.

Take this week’s Caribbean Wallpaper as an example.

Really, take it. Download it now by clicking here.

I can wait…

Got it?

OK, now look at this image! You’re looking at Tulum, one of the last Mayan cities—perched above steep cliffs overlooking immaculate white sand beaches and our old friend: The Caribbean Sea. Once the Mayans abandoned the city after their numbers were ravaged by diseases brought from Europe, it drifted off into memory. Later, the City of Dawn was rediscovered in 1518 and re-mapped in 1843. In the latter part of the last century, visitors to the Yucatan Peninsula looking for a more laid-back vibe than could be found in places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen began to flock to the area—setting up yoga retreats and clothing optional hideaways. But in the information age we live in, nothing remains a secret for long, and soon busloads of tourists began crowding Tulum’s once quiet shores.

Even today, though it’s endured years of development, Tulum still has many unique experiences to offer. There’s some of the best food on the planet (seriously) served nightly at Hechizo, agua de chayas flowing freely, excellent kitesurfing conditions, and, of course, the ruins.

Now that you’ve downloaded the wallpaper (you did download it, right?), you can skip the maddening rush of the buses from Cancun and marvel at the splendor of the Mayan Ruins at your leisure.

Enjoy!

Playa Time in Tulum, Mexico: Wish You Were Here

I have lots of great memories of my last visit to Tulum, the small seaside town nestled just south of Playa del Carmen in Mexico's famed Riviera Maya. Sadly, the beach wasn't one of them.
