Deal Of The Week: Enjoy a Digital Detox in Mexico

A place like this might seem perfect for detaching oneself fully and completely from the demands and distractions of the modern world. Soft sand, clear skies, soothing seas, and not a smartphone, tablet, or laptop in sight.

This, however, is an uncommonly quiet corner of Riviera Maya, one of the more touristy locales along Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Aside from sublime shores like these and a raucously charming downtown area that echoes Duval Street in Key West, the Riviera Maya experience is mostly about resort hotels.

Large. Sprawling. Resort. Hotels.

The lot of them are more than ably-equipped to keep you connected 24/7 like you never left home, of course. (Hooray?)

Yeah, I hear your grumbling, and so too, apparently, does the Grand Velas Resorts in Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit. New for 2015, they’re inviting guests to power down, disconnect from the modern world, and reconnect with each other through a new Digital Detox program.

This isn’t some watered down unplugging where you simply surrender your cell phone at check-in either. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit actually has a Digital Detox Concierge on-staff. His duty: to fully “cleanse” your suite of all digital devices. Not just your own, but also those already found in your room, like the flatscreen TV.

At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, guests opting to participate in the Digital Detox program can trade-in their electronics for complementary activities. Guests are given a bracelet in exchange for their electronics that guarantees them access to such fun non-digital activities as a biking, ecological tours of the local flora and fauna, snorkeling, and spa treatments.

Guests are even required to earn a total of four activity bracelets (one for each day of the detox) just to get their electronics back!

All-inclusive rates at Grand Velas properties include luxury suite accommodations, à la carte gourmet meals at a variety of specialty restaurants, premium branded beverages, 24-hour in-suite service, fitness center, taxes, gratuity and more.

Nightly rates start at $355 at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit and $393 at Grand Velas Riviera Maya. Rates are per person, per night based on double occupancy. Minimum night requirements, package components, and other restrictions apply and may vary by resort.

For reservations and more information, visit Velas Resorts online.
