Parting Shot From Great Abaco Island, The Bahamas

Of all the hundreds, sometimes thousands of images we capture along our various Caribbean adventures, it is often the last pic –the parting shot – from each trip that sticks with me the longest; that fuels my wanderlust for returning to the islands more quickly than usual. You’re looking at just such an image. I snapped it about an hour before heading to the airport in Marsh Harbour three years ago. I’d started my last morning on Great Abaco Island with a quick run, turning right as I exited Abaco Beach Resort and heading north along Bay Street toward the Eastern Shores section of the island. Past the ferry dock and the colorful (both in appearance and name) Back 2 Da Island Restaurant, I kept a steady pace along the road enjoying scenic seascapes and progressively more palatial homes and villas as I went. The scene above, though, stopped me in my tracks. What was this beach? I was probably less than two miles from the resort that had served as my home base of exploration of Great Abaco and several of her surrounding islands, islets, sandbars, and cays for the better part of the week. Still, I hadn’t any clue about what appeared to be a sweet little enclave of sand and sea that sat right under my nose the whole time. The image still teases me to this day, ensuring that I’ll be back in this special part of The Bahamas soon.
