Beaches of the Silk Cayes

Just over 20 miles off the the coast of Placencia glistens 26,000 acres of protected seas: the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. Here, myriad fish spawn from March to June bringing huge guests for dinner. Of course, I’m talking about whale sharks! Intrepid snorkelers get a rare opportunity to swim with these behemoths, the biggest fish in the world just beyond the reef, though your best chances are by diving the area. And when you’re done exploring all there is to enjoy below the surface, the beaches of the Silk Cayes, just outside the protected reserve, are here to welcome you for a little time on the hard with a bitta in your hand under the Belizean sun.
