Where The Conch Used To Come From In Turks and Caicos

This used to be where the conch came from in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. The Caicos Conch Farm was the world’s only such facility until it closed due to damage caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria last year. (Political factors also apparently played a role.)  Even in its last days, though, the uncommon farm wasn’t producing all that much conch. When I last visited in the summer of 2016, the scant amounts of superior (said to be sushi-grade by our guide) conch meat cultivated here was all earmarked for export overseas. Somehow, unbelievably to me, the very best conch meat in the Turks and Caicos wasn’t available for sampling in Provo, or anywhere else under the TCI flag. Fear not, though – you can still eat your fill of succulent conch ceviche, cracked conch, conch burgers, etc. at such legendary rum and conch haunts as Bugaloo’s Conch Crawl and Da’ Conch Shack in Provo. Is it as good as the conch formerly produced in these pens? Sadly, we may never know…
