Buck Island, St. Croix – Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday

When it comes to traveling to St. Croix, I can think of many, many reasons to make the trip. We’ve talked about some of them right here on Uncommon Caribbean. There’s the easternmost point of the United States at Point Udall, St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the beer-drinking pigs, the favorite rum of Steve and I: Cruzan Rum, the excellent food to be had every year at the St. Croix Food and Wine Experience, the excellent food to be had year-round at restaurants like Salud! and, of course, our own resident mixologist, Jesse Card.

But for me, and I’m sure Steve would agree, the real reason we visit St. Croix, is to go home. It’s where we were born and raised, so no matter how long I’ve lived stateside, St. Croix has always been and will always be home.

And what’s one of my favorite things to do when I go home? Literally, beg one of my friends with a boat to have a Buck Island lime. There’s no better way to spend the day than casting off, heading north for a few minutes, and weighing anchor at this protected paradise. The water is warm and crystal clear. You could go for a short hike if you get bored, but really this is just about limin’ strong. Knocking back some Greenies, floating around, reminiscing, and letting the hours pass blissfully by.

This week’s wallpaper was shot on just one of those days back in 2009 looking back toward St. Croix from Buck Island. Put it on your desktop and see if you can feel the sun’s warmth and a decidedly easy island vibe pouring over you.

Buck Island, St. Thomas

There's another Buck Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The St. Thomas version, though, is not much like the Buck Island we grew up knowing in St. Croix.
