Full Moon SUP Fun Back Home in St. Croix
The waters off the west coast of our home island of St. Croix, particularly those around Frederiksted, are absolutely ideal for paddleboarding. Generally calm and always clear, the sea stretches like an enormous pane of glass due west to the horizon.
It’s little wonder then that one of the finest SUP outfitters in the islands is based right here.
Freedom City Surf Board Shop and Grill is, as its name implies, several different things.
The grill part lives up to most every surf shack beach bar dream you’ve ever had. Booze, great burgers, and Tex-Mex faves near the waves – what’s not to like?
On surf side, well, you have just about every manner of board sport possible – windsurfing, skateboarding, surfing, and skimboarding; Freedom City can hook you up with ’em all.
The big draw here, though, is stand-up paddleboarding.
SUP yoga, SUP Fitness, SUP CrossFit, SUP Pup Paddles, special events like the Coconut Cup SUP Festival, and sunset SUP excursions are on offer.
The Freedom City Surf experience I’m most anxious to try: Full Moon SUP. I especially wish I was back home to try it this month as there’s a once-in-a-millennium supermoon scheduled for the night of November 14th!
The moon that night will be closer to the earth than it’s been in 68 years! It’ll be 30% brighter than usual and appear 14% larger, which should make for an amazing night hovering atop the sea.
The next supermoon like it won’t come around again until 2034, so if you’re in St. Croix you’ll definitely want to get down to Freedom City Surf to live this rare experience in a most uncommon way.
